Program outcomes
Upon successful completion of all Histologic Science program requirements, graduates will be able to:
- Apply the principles and methodologies, problem solving, and troubleshooting, for all major areas practiced in the contemporary histopathology laboratory to include, receiving and accessioning tissue specimens, preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examination, assist with gross examination and frozen section procedures, and identifying tissue structures and their staining characteristics.
- Monitor quality control within predetermined limits and perform preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments, referring to appropriate sources for repairs when necessary.
- Recognize factors that affect procedures and results, taking appropriate action within predetermined limits when corrections are indicated.
- Identify the ethical, legal, and regulatory framework of the healthcare industry and exercise principles of leadership, management, safety, and supervision within these parameters.
- Demonstrate professional conduct and interpersonal communication skills with laboratory personnel, other healthcare professionals, and with the public while respecting a multicultural society.
- Analyze and synthesize ideas while applying critical thinking skills in professional and personal problem solving.
- Recognize and act upon individual needs for continuing education, as a function of growth and maintenance of professional competence in preparation to take the national examination given by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), leading to certification as a Histotechnician (HT).
