How is venipuncture performed?

The process generally includes:
- Vein selection: Identifying an appropriate vein, most commonly in the antecubital area of the arm (the inner elbow) or, in some cases, the hand.
- Skin preparation: Cleaning the puncture site with an antiseptic to reduce the risk of infection.
- Blood collection: Inserting a sterile needle into the vein so blood flows through the needle into a collection tube.
- Post-procedure care: Removing the needle, applying pressure to the site, and securing a bandage to promote healing.
Once collected, blood samples are labeled and sent to a medical laboratory for analysis.
