What is phlebotomy certification?
Phlebotomy certification shows that a healthcare professional has the training and skills needed to safely draw blood and handle lab specimens. A common credential is the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
Earning certification helps demonstrate that you are prepared to work as a phlebotomy technician in clinical settings.
What does the CPT exam include?
The Certified Phlebotomy Technician exam tests your knowledge of:
- Basic lab procedures
- Communicating with patients
- Drawing blood (venipunctures and finger sticks)
- Handling and labeling specimens
- Infection control and safety procedures
The exam is about two hours long and can be taken at a testing center or online. After passing, you earn the CPT credential.
Who is eligible for phlebotomy certification?
To take the CPT exam, you must meet one of the following requirements:
Option 1:
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Complete a phlebotomy training program within the last five years
- Perform at least 30 venipunctures and 10 finger sticks on live individuals
OR
Option 2:
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Gain 1–2 years of supervised work experience in phlebotomy
- Perform at least 30 venipunctures and 10 finger sticks
Is certification required to become a phlebotomy technician?
Certification requirements vary, but most employers prefer or require it. In fact, industry research shows that about 96% of employers encourage or require certification for phlebotomy technicians.*

How do I prepare for phlebotomy certification?
Preparation starts with completing a training program that includes classroom instruction and hands-on clinical practice.
During training, students learn how to draw blood properly, follow safety guidelines, and interact with patients. Many students also use practice exams and study guides to prepare for the certification test.
