What is EKG certification?
EKG certification is a professional credential that confirms an individual’s ability to perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) and support cardiac diagnostic testing. The certification most commonly pursued by aspiring EKG technicians is the Certified EKG Technician (CET) credential, which can be earned through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
EKG technicians measure and monitor the electrical activity of the heart by attaching electrodes to a patient’s body and administering diagnostic tests such as standard EKGs and stress tests. They help ensure accurate readings and provide physicians with the data needed to identify heart abnormalities. Earning the CET certification demonstrates that a technician has the knowledge and hands-on skills required to safely perform these responsibilities.
What does the EKG certification exam involve?
The CET exam is a two-hour assessment that evaluates knowledge of cardiac anatomy, EKG procedures, patient preparation, safety protocols, and basic test interpretation. Candidates may take the exam at an approved testing center or through remote proctoring.
After successfully passing the exam, candidates earn the CET credential.
What are the eligibility requirements for the CET exam?
To qualify for the CET exam through the NHA, candidates must meet one of the following pathways:
- Hold a high school diploma or GED and complete an EKG training program within the past five years, plus perform at least 10 live EKGs
OR
- Hold a high school diploma or GED and have 1-2 years of supervised work experience as an EKG technician, plus perform at least 10 live EKGs
