GRIT Scale

What is the GRIT Scale?

Functioning as a psychological assessment tool, the GRIT Scale was developed by psychologist Angela Duckworth to measure perseverance and passion when working towards long-term goals.

While GRIT is an acronym for Growth, Resilience, Instinct, and Tenacity, the meaning of the acronym reflects the definition of grit — referring to one’s ability to show bravery and resolve when confronted with setbacks and obstacles.

How does the GRIT Scale work?

The GRIT Scale is a series of 12 statements and questions you respond to on a scale from 1 to 5, indicating the extent to which you agree or disagree with each prompt. Self-reflective by design, the GRIT Scale encourages you to think critically about your resilience.

Some prompts on the GRIT Scale include:

  • “I finish whatever I begin.”
  • “Setbacks don’t discourage me.”
  • “I have overcome setbacks to conquer an important challenge.”

How is the GRIT Scale used in the master’s in Organizational Leadership program?

Because perseverance is an essential leadership quality, the Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) program uses the GRIT scale to assess your ability to lead effectively in challenging environments. By understanding your level of grit, educators can provide support and resources — helping you build resilience to succeed in the program and beyond.

How can I develop greater resilience?

You can grow your resilience through deliberate practice. Some strategies for enhancing your grit include:

  • Being open and receptive to feedback
  • Embracing a growth mindset
  • Establishing and structuring specific, challenging goals
  • Focusing on goals and projects you’re passionate about
