Process for Requesting Work Study Student Assistance

Instructions for Requestor

(If you are planning to hire a "new" work study student):

  • Two weeks prior to each semester, supervisors are to complete the "FWS Request Planning Worksheet" outlining their department'ss need for work study assistance (NOTE: The worksheet only needs to be filled out if you are requesting more than 1 work student student). Attached to the worksheets should be a "Work Study Position Description" form for each position noted on the planning worksheet. Submit the documentation to David Zoppoli in Career Services for approval from the Executive Vice President and Provost. [The forms are available on the Goodwin College website. Go to the Administration tab and scroll down to Human Resources and click on Federal Work Study Instructions/Forms. You can also obtain the forms directly from David Zoppoli in Career Services.]
Please be advised that students will be limited to working a maximum of 15 hours per week and must maintain a 2.0 GPA (for peer tutors a 3.0 GPA). Permission to exceed the 15 hours per week maximum may only be granted by the Executive Vice President and Provost.
  • Once the Executive Vice President and Provost has approved the request, the forms will be forwarded back to David Zoppoli in Career Services who will post the position descriptions on the Job Board (1st floor) and on the Goodwin College Central Network webpage.
  • If pre-approval is requested, once a department has identified a candidate (or candidates) for hire (or consideration), the department supervisor may forward the name(s) to David Zoppoli. David will forward the names to Andrea Young in Financial Aid for pre-approval. Andrea will e-mail back to David the results of candidate status.
  • David communicates the results of work study student pre-approval status to the department supervisor.
  • Department supervisor makes work study hiring decision and directs student(s) to David Zoppoli in Career Services to obtain "Federal Work Study Award Letter," job posting and a copy of "Instructions for Students."
  • Student then goes to the Financial Aid Department so that Financial Aid can determine their eligibility for federal work study employment. Student will then sign the "Federal Work Study Award Letter."
  • Once approved by Financial Aid, student returns to their Goodwin College supervisor for an employment package.
  • Department supervisors are responsible for ensuring that Human Resources receives a complete employment package prior to the employee being entered into the payroll system.
  • Please direct all inquiries to Career Services.

Instructions for Students:

  1. View job postings on the Career Services Job Board (1st Floor) across from Career Services, or on the Goodwin College Central Network webpage at www.collegecentral.com/goodwin to see what work study opportunities exist.
  2. If there is a posting you are interested in, please follow the application instructions on the Work Study Position Description. If you have any questions, please see David Zoppoli in Career Services or contact him at dzoppoli@goodwin.edu or (860) 727-6768.
  3. If the department supervisor chooses to hire you, you will be directed to see David Zoppoli in Career Services to obtain a "Federal Work Study Award Letter," job posting and a copy of “Instructions for Students.”
  4. David will direct you to go to the Financial Aid department so that Financial Aid can determine your eligibility for federal work study employment. If you are eligible, you will be asked to sign the "Federal Work Study Award Letter."
  5. Return all completed forms, including a copy of the job posting and the Federal Work Study Award Letter to your Goodwin College supervisor.
  6. Your Goodwin College supervisor will have you complete a Goodwin College employment package, and submit that to Human Resources. (We understand that most of the information is on your resume, but you must repeat it on the application.) The federal W-4 form requires you to fill in your name, address, and filing status. Please make certain you complete all information in boxes labeled one (1) through seven (7). You will not have to fill out a CT-W4 because federal work study wages are not subject to state unemployment tax. As a federal work study employee, your wages are not eligible for unemployment insurance.
  7. The Drug-Free Workplace Policy form is a 4-page document. Please read and sign the front page and return with your application. The remaining 3 pages of the document should be retained by you.
  8. Please provide Goodwin College with copies of your I-9 documentation. Necessary documents are listed on the reverse side of the I-9 form, e.g. license and SS card.

Thank you, and welcome to Goodwin College.
