Frequently Asked Questions About Scholarships

How do I apply for a scholarship?

First, review the eligibility requirements for each listed scholarship to determine if you qualify. The requirements differ from scholarship to scholarship, so take a close look.

Once you have determined you qualify for one or more scholarships, fill out ONE application and attach your essay question answers to the application. You DO NOT have to fill out separate application forms for each scholarship. Make sure you answer the required questions, and mark your essays with headers so it is clear which question you are answering what scholarship you are applying for.

Why aren’t the same scholarships offered every semester?

A number of scholarships have been established by generous friends of the college. As part of its charter, the Goodwin College Foundation, through its endowment, awards annual student scholarships, as well. To ensure scholarships are available to students every semester, application and selection rounds are conducted three times a year, with most scholarships being awarded only once a year.

Who should I ask to write my letter of recommendation?

Start by asking a faculty member, employer or mentor. Do not ask a friend or family member. The scholarship recommendation is similar to a professional reference; choose someone who knows you and can expound upon your strengths and accomplishments.

How do I know I am in need of financial assistance? Do I have to provide documentation to show I am eligible to receive a scholarship?

You DO NOT need to provide documentation with your application that shows you are in financial need. The Foundation works with both the Business Office and Financial Aid to determine your eligibility using your EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) as calculated on the Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR).

If I am awarded a scholarship, when can I use it?

Generally, scholarship awards are to be used in the next one or two semesters after they are awarded. Under special circumstances (e.g. emergency leave from the college), you may have up to one year to use a scholarship award. We recommend when you receive a scholarship that you meet with your counselor in the Financial Aid Office to review how the money will be applied in your specific situation.

I have already received a scholarship. Can I apply again in future semesters?

Yes! There is no limit to the number of scholarships you can apply for or receive. We encourage you to apply as long as you are an enrolled student and qualify for the scholarship.

Can I get help to complete my scholarship application?

Please check the main lobby of One Riverside Drive for copies of scholarship applications. You will also find scholarship packets, with a resource guide on scholarships, essay tips, and links to other scholarship opportunities. The Academic Success Center, on the 2nd floor of One Riverside Drive, is also an excellent resource for students and provides workshops every semester on how to write an application essay. Also, be on the lookout for scholarships workshops, provided to students to take the stress out of applying for Foundation scholarships.

Are there any online resources that I can use to help me in my scholarship search?

Yes. You can find a number of helpful resources by clicking here. You will find a list of links and information to help you search for additional scholarships.

When will I be informed of a decision regarding my scholarship application?

You will be notified approximately 2-3 weeks after the application deadline if you have or have not been awarded a scholarship.

Are scholarships offered to both full-time and part-time students?

Yes. As long as you are an enrolled and qualify, you will be eligible to apply. You may apply regardless of the number of credits you are taking.

If I am awarded a scholarship, will I receive the money in the form of a check in the mail?

No. An internal transfer of funds will occur. Once you are notified of having received a scholarship, you will be encouraged to contact a Financial Aid counselor who will review your current situation.

Do I qualify for these scholarships if I am a foreign student?

Yes. In fact, because financial aid opportunities are so limited for foreign students, we encourage them to apply.

I just started my program. Can I still apply?

Yes. Some scholarships specify “near the end of your program” but occasionally, there are special circumstances where a scholarship will be awarded to a student early in their program. We encourage you to become familiar with the process of applying for scholarships and save your essays so that you may use and refine them for later application rounds.

Am I required to have a letter of recommendation? Who should I ask to write my letter of recommendation?

No, you are not required to provide a letter of recommendation to apply for any of our scholarships. Letters of recommendation do help our scholarship committee learn more about you as a student, employee, or both.

Start by asking a faculty member, employer or mentor. Do not ask a friend or family member. The scholarship recommendation is similar to a professional reference; choose someone who knows you and can expound upon your strengths and accomplishments.
