2016 Recipients

11th Annual Golf Tournament Scholarships
Yesenia Aponte

Yesenia Aponte (BS Public Safety & Security) - Yesenia lost her mother to alcoholism, leaving her to dealing with siblings who were involved with drugs. She works full-time while attending Goodwin and also cares for three children. She is a proud member of the Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Societies. She looks forward to working with juveniles in the criminal justice system. Fall 2016.

Ama Asante-Boateng (AS Nursing) - Ama was born and raised in Ghana by her father and maternal grandmother. Going back to school as a wife and mother of two young boys has been difficult for her, especially after her oldest son was diagnosed with autism. She enjoys volunteering at Hartford Hospital as well attending Goodwin College Nursing Association meetings. Fall 2016.

Deneen Bouchard

Deneen Bouchard (AS Nursing) - Deneen enjoys volunteering at a local nursing home, where she helps to transport residents, serve lunch, and spend one-on-one time with them. She would like to become a nurse one day to help make a difference in someone else’s life. Fall 2016.


Denise Candelaria

Denise Candelaria (AS Nursing) - After losing her father, Denise was determined to earn a degree in the field of medicine. She works two jobs while also caring for her disabled mother. She is a proud member of the Goodwin College Student Nurses Association. Fall 2016.

Allyson Costello (BS Human Services) - Allyson has been attending Goodwin since 2011 and has two semesters remaining to complete her bachelor’s degree. She sold sell her car to help pay her tuition and has been taking a bus to school ever since. A recovering addict for over seven years, Allyson would one day like to work as a substance abuse counselor or clinician in a long-term rehabilitation program for adolescents and young adults. Fall 2016.

Jeffrey Corwin (AS Nursing) - Fall 2016.

Kendra Dull (BS Health Science) - Growing up, Kendra saw her father physically abuse her mother growing up and has been determined to set a good example for her own son. She enjoys volunteering at Habitat for Humanity and would like to eventually obtain a master’s degree in Business Administration. She looks forward to one day starting a non-profit organization that helps underserved children. Fall 2016.

Angel Ivery

Angel Ivery (AS Nursing) - Angel is currently an assisted living aide at Mercy Community in West Hartford. She has been a peer tutor, student ambassador, and student government treasurer at Goodwin. She enjoys volunteering her time at Toys for Tots and the Hartford Public Library. Fall 2016.

Sherry Kozicki (AS Nursing) - Sherry works two jobs while attending Goodwin and has been in both the retail and food service fields for over 20 years. She enjoys volunteering at local farmers markets and for the Hartford Marathon. She eventually would like to become a physician’s assistant at a hospital in a big city. Fall 2016.

Jerita Mason (AS Nursing) - Jerita and her family migrated to the U.S. from St. Kitts. Most of her family members worked as certified nursing assistants, inspiring her to enter the field herself. After attending a local community college, she decided transferred to Goodwin and was accepted into the nursing program. She hopes to become a nurse anesthetist. Fall 2016.

Kaleigh Miller (BS Management & Leadership) - Kaleigh holds a full-time job while also attending Goodwin full-time. After becoming estranged from her parents, she moved into Goodwin’s housing to be closer to school and her job. She has been an active member of the Goodwin College CREW and the Phi Theta Kappa National Honors Society as well as the events coordinator for the Student Government Association. Her post-graduation plans include earning her master’s degree and becoming a certified portfolio manager at an investment firm. Fall 2016.

Carol Nelson (BS Human Services) - Carol came to Goodwin in January 2013 after she was terminated from her job of over 30 years. She serves her church as director of the altar guild at her church, Eucharistic minister, and a licensed Eucharistic visitor. Since coming to Goodwin, she has been elected president of the Human Services Club and the Goodwin Chapter of the Tau Upsilon Alpha Honor Society. She hopes to become an advocate for the elderly in a social services agency or senior center one day. Fall 2016.

Joseph Padilla

Joseph Padilla (AS Nursing) - Joseph came to Goodwin after leaving the University of New Haven to care for his brother and grandmother. He has worked multiple jobs, including library assistant at the Hoffman Family Library. He enjoys volunteering his time as a tutor at Goodwin and is planning on getting his master’s degree and becoming an Advanced Practical Registered Nurse. Fall 2016.


Veronica Ramos

Veronica Ramos (AS Nursing) - Veronica suffered through a difficult divorce, resulting in her being homeless for two months. After 2016 accident left her without transportation, she received a generous donation from the Church House of Restoration, which agreed to pay half her tuition for the summer semester. She dreams of becoming a nurse to help those in need. Fall 2016.


Rebecca Rioux

Rebecca Rioux (BS – Human Services) — Rebecca came from a broken home and moved out when she was 18. Now a mother of two, she works 40 hours a week while also attending night classes at Goodwin. She enjoys being a positive role model and has worked with emotionally disturbed children for the last 13 years. Fall 2016.

Twanna Smith (AS Nursing) - Twanna currently works two jobs, attends school, and takes care of three children. She hopes to become a registered nurse in Pennsylvania. Fall 2016.

Georgia Gentles (AS Nursing) - While attending Goodwin, Georgia is also a full-time housekeeper, wife, mother, and LPN working at an East Hartford nursing home for the past 14 years. After completing her associate degree, she would like to return for her bachelor’s. She hopes to become an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Fall 2016.

Shavonne Overton

Shavonne Overton (BS Nursing) - Shavonne has a true passion for Nursing and was trained in high school to become an emergency medical technician, where she gained hands on experience working on patients in hospitals as well as Shea Stadium. She has lived in New York City, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, and has also worked at Connecticut Culinary Institute as a banquet chef. Furthermore, she received a letter of recommendation from Professor John Levesque, an adjunct faculty member in the Microbiology Department. Spring 2016.

Yolanda Collazo (BS – Human Services) — Yolanda is one the few in her family to finish high school. She was working full-time while also attending Goodwin until she became pregnant, but did not miss a class. She is a current member of the Human Services Club and is looking forward to graduating in June. Summer 2016.

Rebecca Akey

Rebecca Akey (AS Nursing) - Rebecca was fascinated with biology at a young age. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut, she decided to enroll in Goodwin to get into the medical field and study nursing. She enjoys working with children and would like to become a pediatric nurse. Spring 2016.

Melissa Desisto (BS Health Science) — Melissa is a mother of two who is attending college to get a second degree, having already has bachelor’s degree in biology. Before moving to Connecticut from Boston, she was hired as a research assistant for a large epidemiological study. Spring 2016.

Alexandra Esposito (BS Health Science) — Alexandra works in the psychology department at a Glastonbury elementary school. She enjoys tutoring other Goodwin students and appreciates the strong support system the College provides for its students. Spring 2016.

Rachel Girouard

Rachel Girouard (BS Human Services) — Rachel is a single mother who works 40 to 60 hours a week while attending school full-time. She is self-employed as a professional photographer (www.rachelgirouard.com). She enjoys giving back to her community. She is the provider for an adopted child and a daughter who love celebrating the holidays. Spring 2016.


Yolanda Collazo

Rhonesia Henry (AS Nursing) — Rhonesia is a single mother of three young children. After losing her mother to a devastating car accident, she decided to take a new path and earn a nursing degree at Goodwin. She currently works as a License Practical Nurse in pediatric home care. Spring 2016.


Alicia Larocque

Alicia Larocque (BS – Family Studies) — When Alicia was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, she withdrew from school to battle the disease. Since returning to Goodwin, she has walked for the Jimmy Fund, supporting the Dana Farber Institute. She also serves as treasurer and secretary of the Special Education Parent Teacher Organization (SEPTO) in her area. Summer 2016.

Dwayne Mullings

Dwayne Mullings (BS Human Services) — Before enrolling at Goodwin, Dwayne had been accepted at UConn’s agricultural program as well as Manchester Community College. He loves to work with animals and hopes to one day become a social worker. Spring 2016.


Jessica Quinones

Jessica Quinones (AS Nursing) — The single mother of two teenage children, Jessica works full-time while attending school. She enjoys her work at a local hospital and is looking forward to completing her last semester here at Goodwin. Spring 2016.

Alex Stagnaro (BS – Public Safety & Security) — Alex is the first person in his family to attend college. He has enjoyed being a math tutor in his time at Goodwin. After he receives his bachelor’s degree, he hopes to attain masters’ degrees in social work and law. Summer 2016.

Cristal Martinez (AS Nursing) - Cristal is currently the acting secretary of the Goodwin College Student Nurses Association. After her cousin was recently diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, she donated to the Foundation and participated in a walk at the Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field. After finishing school, she is getting married and dreams of traveling outside of the country with her new husband. Spring 2016.

Kellie Brown (AS Nursing) — Kellie is a single mother of two girls and works in a doctor’s office. After losing everything to a house fire, she decided to pursue a nursing degree to make a better life for both herself and her children. Spring 2016.

Annamarie Cwikla (BS – Human Services) - Annamarie is a single mother of three. Although she suffered a serious motor vehicle accident in 2013, she has continued with her education at Goodwin. She volunteers as a Girl Scout leader as well as for the Colchester Fire Department. As a professional, she wants to work with needy veterans and raise awareness about veteran’s programs and resources available in Connecticut. Spring 2016.

Jacqueline Duclos (AS – Nursing) — Jacqueline lost her grandfather in 2015 and moved in with her grandmother to help care for her. As a result, she was forced to leave her job and turned to Goodwin to complete her education. She is honored to have received this scholarship award. Summer 2016.

Heather Forbes (AS – Nursing) — Heather is a single mother and an LPN. Since being accepted into the RN program at Goodwin, she has been working a part-time nursing job. She is forever grateful to be at the end of her program and about to graduate. Becoming a nurse has always been her true passion in life. Summer 2016.

Dawn Kirschner

Dawn Kirschner (AS Nursing) — Dawn is an adult student who is looking to become the first in her family to graduate from college. Dawn and her husband returned to Connecticut to be closer to family after living in North Carolina where he was stationed in the Air Force. She draws her inspiration from her oldest son who suffers from Bipolar Disorder. Spring 2016.

Maria Mendrinos (AS Nursing) — After 15 years as a bank manager, Maria decided to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse, inspired by the passing of her father in 2009. Currently, she works for St. Francis Hospital as a nursing assistant. Spring 2016.

Stacey-Lyn Roggerman (AS – OTA) — Stacey is a single, adoptive mother of three children with special needs. She works part time, but still enjoys volunteering her time with her children’s elementary school PTO, as well being the co-leader of the compassionate care committee. Upon graduation, she would like to obtain employment as an OTA in a pediatric or traumatic brain injury rehabilitation center. Summer 2016.

Sirena Sawyer (AS – Nursing) — A single mother of three children, Sirena works part-time while attending Goodwin. She enjoys taking advantage of Goodwin’s movie night, Winter Fest, and Lake Compounce trips every year. She is especially proud of her oldest son, who is about to enter college and wants to become a police officer. Summer 2016.

Maggie Taylor (BS Human Services) - Maggie was forced out of her house at 18 and was left to fend for herself. She has been enrolled at Goodwin since 2012 and has earned received her associate degree in Human Services. She is looking forward to obtaining her bachelor’s degree, as well as a master’s degree in Social Work. Maggie plans to work with youth in the future. Fall 2016.

Thomas Danaher

Thomas Danaher (BS Business Administration) - Thomas currently works as an account manager for a global logistics company. After he experienced difficulty with his vision, it was discovered he had a tumor growing on his pituitary gland that was crushing his optical nerves. After over four years of treatment, the tumor has shrunk and his vision has gone back to normal. He would like to enroll in a Goodwin master’s program, when the college begins offering them.

Michael Spano

Michael Spano (BS Environmental Studies) - Michael is a United States Air Force veteran who served in Grenada, Panama, Somalia, and the Persian Gulf, retiring in 1997 after serving his country for 22 years. He is a member of the Student Conservation Association at Goodwin, and volunteers at Riverfront Earth Day in Hartford and the Cleanup of the Eight Mile River in East Haddam. In addition, he cares for his older brother who is physically handicapped.

Jessica Bower

Jessica Bower (BS Health Science) - Jessica is a single mother of three children, who also cared for her younger brother while working full time. Currently, she works at a health facility as an administrative assistant.

Diana Kastanek

Diana Kastanek (BS Nursing) - Diana is the first in her family to start and complete a college degree. She is also a single parent of three children, two of whom were born with seizure disorders. Currently, she works for a skilled nursing facility and would one day like to work in the field of neurology.

Leone Eluether Alexander

Leone Eluether Alexander (AS Histology) - While attending Goodwin, Leone was forced to leave her alcoholic husband and received help from a shelter for abused woman. Undeterred, she never missed a day of school, even after undergoing a painful surgery.

Alison Dickey

Alison Dickey (BS Environmental Studies & AS Criminal Justice) - Alison currently lives with and cares for her ailing mother while also volunteering her time at Goodwin sponsored events with the DEEP and other environmental organizations. She also enjoys volunteering at the New Britain Housing Authority, helping to trap local feral cats and other wildlife to place them in good homes.

Thersa Ashley (BS Human Services) - Thersa was involved in a serious car accident in 2012 and while in still recovery lost her father to cancer. She had the will and determination to complete her associate’s degree, and is now in the process of earning her bachelor’s degree.

Carlos Blanco (BS Management & Leadership) - Carlos is currently a safety officer and a single father of a daughter. While only a sophomore in high school, he assumed the role of primary care-giver of his family after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. He enjoys coaching youth football in his spare time.

Sarah Crudden

Sarah Crudden (AS Nursing) - Sarah originally attended Goodwin College in 2002 and received her Medical Assistant degree. She adopted a son in 2008 who showed signs of developmental problems. She has raised money for Foodshare, the National Kidney Foundation, and Autism Speaks.


Leticia Flowers

Leticia Flowers (AS Nursing) - Leticia currently works full time as a sales representative while raising her son. She enjoys mentoring new employees at her job with a positive attitude.


Dayna Haskins

Dayna Haskins (BS Human Services) - Dayna began her studies at Goodwin in 2010 and graduated with her associates’ degree while also being named to the Dean’s List. As she completed courses for the associate’s degree, she spent three months at Catholic Charities, in the Department of Nurturing Families. She enjoys helping families learn about developmental stages and proper care of their children.


Laura Hayes (AS Nursing) - Laura was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and soon thereafter was let go by her employer. Undeterred, she continued her dream at Goodwin to become a nurse. She believes that always having a positive attitude, communicating ideas, and being supportive are great traits a leader should possess.

Pedro Jurado

Pedro Jurado (AS Nursing) - Pedro performs his clinical at St. Francis Hospital & Medical Center in Hartford. He has received generous praise about his work from patients, colleagues and faculty during his time in the Nursing Program.

Yolanda Lewis (AS Nursing) - Yolanda is a single mother of two children, the oldest being in college as well. She is from Bloomfield, CT. It has been a life-long dream of hers to become a nurse to help others, as well as her family.

Laura Manes (AS Nursing) - Laura has been at Goodwin since 2011 and also has a teenage son with ADHD that she cares for. After being diagnosed with Relapse Remitting Multiple Sclerosis in 2012, she was determined to continue on with her program and never missed a class. Laura is an active member in the Relay for Life walks and also had the opportunity to lead her first MS walk with team Connecticut. She hopes to form a Goodwin team that can walk during the MS event this coming April, too.

Tatyana Moreva (AS Nursing) - Tatyana came to the United States 11 years ago from Uzbekistan, formerly the U.S.S.R. She has volunteered in the New London Synagogue’s kitchen, cooking during holidays and events. She has also been a member of the National Society of Leadership & Success since she was a student at Mitchell College.

Jennifer Phillips (AS Nursing) - After attending a seminar at Goodwin for the Nursing Program, Jennifer decided to enroll and has been a student since 2010. She is a strong advocate for both Autism Speaks and Relay for Life. Several members of her family, including her mother, are survivors of cancer. She enjoys volunteering in her free time as well as spending as much time as possible with her children.

Douglas Sheldon

Douglas Sheldon (AS Nursing) - Douglas lives in Shelton and was a successful software engineer and computer consultant with a BA in Biology and an MS in Computer Science before attending Goodwin. He also has attended Lincoln Tech, graduating at the top of his class with a 4.0 GPA while receiving a score of 99 on the National Registered Medical Assistant exam. He started his own company, Sheldon Consulting, LLC. In addition, he worked as a salesman selling pool and patio furniture at Namco, selling shoes at Hawley Lane and then furniture at Raymour and Flanagan. At Raymour, he became a top ten regional salesman. His 88 year-old stepmother was a nurse at Sandy Hook schools for many years.

Anna Sloan (AS Nursing) - Anna is an adult learner who works full time while attending Goodwin. After her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, Anna decided to go back to school in the nursing program. She has developed numerous lasting relationships with her patients.

Corey Smith (BS Management & Leadership) - Corey is a single father to a three-year-old son, while also working two jobs. He uses the skills he has learned at Goodwin to mentor young men who are incarcerated at the Connecticut Juvenile Training School in Middletown.

Larissa Waltower

Larissa Waltower (AS Nursing) - Larissa has successfully completed two programs and become nationally certified in EKG and as a phlebotomy technician, while also being a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda. After almost seven years at Goodwin, she has raised a young daughter named Lilyana. Currently, she is a PCA in the Hartford Hospital Emergency Department.

Julia Steele

Julia Steele (AS Nursing) - Julia was a high school dropout and eventually went back to get her high school diploma at Hartford Adult High School. She has three children. In her spare time she volunteers with FoodShare, to help combat hunger in the East Hartford community. She graduated with high honors from Branford Career Institute in the Paralegal Studies program in 2005.

Julia Pinto

Julia Pinto (AS Nursing) - Julia has been in the nursing field the last 12 years, working as an LPN in the field of geriatrics. She is a single mother of a three year old boy. She was recently promoted to a Regional Nurse Evaluator with her company. Above all else, she enjoys making a difference and being a positive influence on her son, as well as her peers.

Nora Garriga

Nora Garriga (BS Nursing) - Nora completed her Associates degree in Nursing this past June, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She was recognized with a Goodwin academic excellence award. She is currently enrolled in the BS Nursing program. Nora has a college-aged son. She recently gave a presentation about the importance of flu shots to a classroom of children who attend the Sports and Medicine Academy in Hartford. Michele Gomez

Michele Gomez (BS Nursing) - Michele has been enrolled at Goodwin College since 2008, and is a proud mother of four and grandmother of four, as well. After losing all of her belongings and home to a fire, she has pulled through to finish her program. She is extremely active in the community, participating in such events as Rebuilding Together, Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure, Down n’ Dirty, Run or Dye, and the Graduate Expo here at Goodwin.

Shannon Nicholson (AS Nursing) - Shannon is a mother of three who works full time while attending Goodwin. She is a Medical Assistant in an internal medicine and geriatric office. Recently, she completed a month long project to obtain patient-centered medical home care recognition for her office.

Melanie Sawyer

Melanie Sawyer (AS Nursing) - Melanie is a proud mother of three young boys while also working two jobs. She hopes to become a Neonatal ICU nurse, as babies hold a special place in her heart. Melanie has a passion for people, and proudly portrays her love for Goodwin at her places of work, encouraging and promoting Goodwin’s great nursing programs.

Aaron Schroeter (AS Nursing) - Aaron is a father of two young boys and also has a full-time job. His young boys help motivate him to succeed, even when times were tough. He currently serves as one of five core leaders of the Young Adult Ministry at Crossroads Community Cathedral in East Hartford. Over Thanksgiving, his team was able to provide over 70 families with turkey dinner boxes.

Stephanie Soto

Christine Sievel (AS Respiratory Care) - Christine is a mother of two who dreams of becoming a clinical instructor one day. She enjoys spending time with her children and volunteering for new projects at her part-time job. She resides in Bristol, CT.


Stephanie Soto

Stephanie Soto (BS Human Services) - Stephanie is a first generation college student who comes from a low-income family. She is able to balance her school schedule while working 60 hours a week as a residential instructor at a DCF funded group home for adolescent boys. She is motivated by helping her mother and her sister, who is both deaf and autistic.


Julia Steele

Julia Steele (AS Nursing) - Julia was a high school dropout and eventually went back to get her high school diploma at Hartford Adult High School. She has three children. In her spare time she volunteers with FoodShare, to help combat hunger in the East Hartford community. She graduated with high honors from Branford Career Institute in the Paralegal Studies program in 2005.

Angel Ivery

Angel Ivery (AS Nursing) - Angel is currently an assisted living aide at Mercy Community in West Hartford. She has been a peer tutor, student ambassador, and student government treasurer at Goodwin. She enjoys volunteering her time at Toys for Tots and the Hartford Public Library.

Shevel Aikens (AS Nursing) - A mother of three children, Shevel worked in her clinical rotation at Saint Francis in the Cardiology Unit this past spring.

Rebecca Akey

Rebecca Akey (AS Nursing) - Rebecca was fascinated with biology at a young age. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut, she decided to enroll in Goodwin to get into the medical field and study nursing. She enjoys working with children and would like to become a pediatric nurse.

Genoveffa Baballeku (AS Respiratory Care) - Genoveffa struggled growing up, as her parents were forced to flee their home in search of a better life. Currently, she works two jobs while attending Goodwin. After graduation, she would like to work in a hospital intensive care unit in the Hartford area.

Deneen Bouchard

Deneen Bouchard (AS Nursing) - Deneen enjoys volunteering at a local nursing home, where she helps to transport residents, serve lunch, and spend one-on-one time with them. She would like to become a nurse one day to help make a difference in someone else’s life.


Natesha Burton (AS Medical Assisting) - Natesha is a single mother of two, who is one semester away from earning her degree. She currently works on a per diem basis processing individual and business tax return forms. Her goal is to one day work in an OB/GYN office.

Jamie Cappuccetti

Jamie Cappuccetti (AS Nursing) - Jamie began her career at Goodwin in 2011. Soon after, she lost her young mother and began caring for her father, who was diagnosed with colon cancer. She was inspired to become a nurse by her Aunt Ursula, someone who has supported and encouraged her along the way.

Annamarie Cwikla (BS – Human Services) - Annamarie is a single mother of three. Although she suffered a serious motor vehicle accident in 2013, she has continued with her education at Goodwin. She volunteers as a Girl Scout leader as well as for the Colchester Fire Department. As a professional, she wants to work with needy veterans and raise awareness about veteran’s programs and resources available in Connecticut.

Kelly Desso

Kelly Desso (BS Public Safety & Security) - Kelly transferred from Central Connecticut State University to Goodwin in 2011. From a young age, she has loved music and became an oboist with the local orchestra. Currently, she is the only female fare enforcement officer for the new Connecticut Fastrak bus system.


Tennicha Frater-Chin (BS Human Services) - A mother of one child, Tennicha was cut back on her work hours to return to school. She enjoys working in her West Indian community and encouraging young people to take education seriously. Upon graduation, she would like to establish and open her own private therapy practice.

Lauren Fredette (BS Nursing) - Lauren has been attending Goodwin since 2008. She received her associate degree in 2009 and is currently working at the Institute of Living with mentally ill children and adolescents. She hopes to open her own practice to provide psychiatric care in her community and the surrounding area.

Jeanette Freytag

Jeanette Freytag (BS Health Science) - Jeanette developed a love for nursing at a young age after volunteering at a local hospital. She works two jobs provide for her family. Her post-graduation plans include becoming a neuroscience nurse and working with patients with brain and nervous system disorders.

Laura Hayes (AS Nursing) - Laura was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and soon thereafter was let go by her employer. Undeterred, she continued her dream at Goodwin to become a nurse. She believes that always having a positive attitude, communicating ideas, and being supportive are great traits a leader should possess.

Marianne Henley

Marianne Henley (AS Nursing) - Marianne lost her job at Aetna during the recession. During her first year of unemployment, her house went into foreclosure, and her only brother passed away the day before Thanksgiving. Through all the challenges and sorrows, she continued to volunteer at her local church and has coordinated event programs and dinners. Currently, her ambitions include working at a hospital or long-term care facility and mentoring future nursing students.


Heidi Jackson

Heidi Jackson (AS Respiratory Care) - Heidi currently works full time while also attending Goodwin, regularly putting in 16-hour days. She recently lost her grandmother and cousin. She enjoys volunteering at the Thanksgiving Box Drive and the Travelers Championship. She is also a member of the Respiratory Care Club.

Laura Manes (AS Nursing) - Laura has been at Goodwin since 2011 and also has a teenage son with ADHD that she cares for. After being diagnosed with Relapse Remitting Multiple Sclerosis in 2012, she was determined to continue on with her program and never missed a class. Laura is an active member in the Relay for Life walks and also had the opportunity to lead her first MS walk with team Connecticut. She hopes to form a Goodwin team that can walk during the MS event this coming April, too.

Cristal Martinez (AS Nursing) - Cristal is currently the acting secretary of the Goodwin College Student Nurses Association. After her cousin was recently diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, she donated to the Foundation and participated in a walk at the Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field. After finishing school, she is getting married and dreams of traveling outside of the country with her new husband.

Lakeisha Mitchell (BS Nursing) - Lakeisha began at Goodwin in 2010 after being accepted in the Summer Bridge Program. Having already completed her associate degree in nursing, she is continuing on to pursue bachelor’s degree. Currently, she is working as a correctional nurse. She would like to become a college professor teaching nursing students one day.

Nathalie Morton (AS Nursing) - Nathalie is a mother of four children, three of whom are currently attending college. After her husband passed away unexpectedly, she was convinced by a friend to go back to school to become a CNA. Her goal after graduation is to work in the public school system or in a community health center.

Karen Nozzolillo

Karen Nozzolillo (AS Supply Chain & Logistics) - Karen is a single mother of two teenagers and works three jobs to support herself and her family and to pay for school. She enjoys volunteering as the vice-president of the all-sports booster club at her children’s high school. She hopes to set an example for her children as they progress through school to never give up on their dreams and ambitions.


Shavonne Overton

Shavonne Overton (BS Nursing) - Shavonne has a true passion for Nursing and was trained in high school to become an emergency medical technician, where she gained hands on experience working on patients in hospitals as well as Shea Stadium. She has lived in New York City, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, and has also worked at Connecticut Culinary Institute as a banquet chef. Furthermore, she received a letter of recommendation from Professor John Levesque, an adjunct faculty member in the Microbiology Department.

Michael Spano

Michael Spano (BS Environmental Studies) - Michael is a United States Air Force veteran who served in Grenada, Panama, Somalia, and the Persian Gulf, retiring in 1997 after serving his country for 22 years. He is a member of the Student Conservation Association at Goodwin, and volunteers at Riverfront Earth Day in Hartford and the Cleanup of the Eight Mile River in East Haddam. In addition, he cares for his older brother who is physically handicapped.

Alex Stagnaro (BS Public Safety & Security) - Alex is the first person in his family to attend college. He has enjoyed being a math tutor in his time at Goodwin. After he receives his bachelor’s degree, he hopes to attain masters’ degrees in social work and law.

Karen Ward

Karen Ward (AS Nursing) - Karen began her journey as a nurse when she cared for her terminally ill father. She enjoys volunteering at the Thanksgiving Turkey Drive, Enfield Food Shelf, and Enfield Animal Shelter. It is her goal to become a registered nurse upon graduation.


Julia Steele

Kieauntae Watkins (AS Nursing) - Being only two classes away from graduation, Kieauntae is very grateful to have received this scholarship, as she was at her financial aid limit. She is proud of an annual Christmas giving drive for the homeless she started at her church, collecting donations of clothing, food, and hygienic items.

Alysha Yard (BS Health Science) - Alysha is a single mother and a full-time Goodwin student with a passion for education. She enjoys being a leader in her community and attends church regularly. Upon graduation, she aspires to be a pediatric physician’s assistant.

Kayla Zalewski

Kayla Zalewski (BS Health Science) - Kayla is the youngest in her family and has been working since she was 14. She enjoys volunteering at a local animal rescue farm, where she helps to feed and care for the animals.
