Magnet School Administration
The magnet schools at Goodwin University have a unique administrative structure. Unlike your local public school, Connecticut River Academy and Riverside Magnet School are operated through a collaborative partnership between Goodwin University and LEARN.
LEARN
Established in 1967 by local districts, LEARN is one of the six Regional Educational Service Centers (RESC) in the state. The purpose of each RESC is to enhance the quality of education and provide solutions to identified needs through a wide range of programs and services.
LEARN currently serves numerous towns and communities in Connecticut with a student population of nearly 53,000. Through its leadership and resources and by working with schools, students, families, and other community agencies, LEARN promotes regional and statewide cooperation and provides a framework for districts to achieve their goals.
LEARN is a public, educational agency governed by a Board of Directors comprising one elected board of education member from each district. The source of funding is local districts, state contracts and grants, federal grants, and private foundations.
LEARN's primary activities include:
- Providing leadership for teaching and learning
- Providing high quality, innovative schools and programs
- Identifying and delivering customized and cost-effective programs and services
- Promoting collaborative partnerships and regional cooperation

The general purpose of Goodwin University Educational Services, Inc. (GUES) is to promote quality public education and provide opportunities, support, and services to children in Goodwin University's community and the State of Connecticut.
GUES primary activities are pursuant to Conn. Gen. Stat. § 10-264l(a)(2)(D), to act on behalf of Goodwin University and its Trustees in matters related to magnet schools, and in that capacity, to apply for and receive grants from the Connecticut State Department of Education for magnet schools on behalf of The University.
GUES will utilize its operating subsidiary, Goodwin University Magnet Schools, Inc., to manage the operations of the Goodwin University magnet schools.
GUES meets twice annually to conduct magnet school business. Meeting times and location will be published along with the agenda on our websites prior to each meeting. All meetings are open to the public and allow for public comment at the start of each meeting. From time to time, special meetings are required and will be published on our websites. All previous agendas and minutes are published on our websites as well.

The general purpose of Goodwin University Magnet Schools, Inc. (GUMS) is to support and promote quality public education. GUMS primary activities are to operate and manage Goodwin University's magnet schools: Connecticut River Academy and Riverside Magnet School.
GUMS is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Goodwin University's magnet schools and will engage the appropriate resources and contracted services that are necessary to operate the magnet schools. GUMS is a direct subsidiary of Goodwin University Educational Services, Inc.
The Goodwin University Magnet School, Inc. Board will be engaged in
- Strategic planning for all of Goodwin's magnet school activities and magnet programs.
- Provide expertise in operating and managing magnet school programs and serve as a resource for other schools, starting new magnet programs.
- Collaborating with state and local school districts and boards of education on issues concerning magnet schools.
