Carmelot\u2019s Story:
\n<\/strong>Accomplishing Nursing Career Ambitions and Achieving his American Dream\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Carmelot Eliassaint loves Caribbean food and the color blue, and relaxes by listening to gospel music and reading. As someone who always enjoys helping people, his favorite quote is, \u201cNever give up despite whatever you are going through,\u201d a sentiment he carries throughout his career search to attain his American dream.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to do something meaningful that makes a difference in people\u2019s everyday lives,\u201d Eliassaint explained. \u201cWorking as a\u00a0nurse<\/a>\u00a0interested me because I knew I would always learn new things. Patients have different problems and needs, and it\u2019s an exciting profession with so much variety.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI first heard about Goodwin when talking to a friend of mine about nursing school,\u201d Eliassaint detailed. \u201cShe referred to Goodwin as\u00a0one of the best nursing schools to go to<\/a>. She thought that Goodwin had a\u00a0flexible schedule<\/a>\u00a0for every student and engaged a solid, committed, and compassionate faculty.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew that being a student requires dedication and time, and I was frustrated when looking at other nursing schools because I wasn\u2019t able to find a program that would allow me to keep my job and other interests. Fortunately, I found Goodwin and quickly learned that they offer it all.\u201d<\/p>\n

After further research, Eliassaint found that the\u00a0associate degree in nursing program\u2019s completion time and cost<\/a>\u00a0were practical. He felt that the curriculum was carefully considered, he appreciated that students could make their own decisions about online or in-person formats, and he discovered that\u00a0Goodwin\u2019s nursing accreditation<\/a>\u00a0was well-known.<\/p>\n

A flexible foundation for his future success <\/strong><\/p>\n

Now a graduate of Goodwin\u2019s associate degree in nursing<\/a> and RN-to-BSN programs<\/a>, and a current student in the Family Nurse Practitioner<\/a> (FNP) program, \u201cOver the course of my nursing classes at Goodwin, I found each program to be flexible,\u201d Eliassaint shared.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor my associate degree, I took day and night on-campus classes.<\/a> For my BSN, I completed the courses online<\/a>, and for the FNP program that I am currently enrolled in, I take all my classes virtually<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOnline classes allow me to learn at my own pace,\u201d Eliassaint acknowledged. \u201cThe format helps develop self-discipline by allowing me to schedule my day and activities around class hours.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile attending school, I was still able to work 40 hours a week and<\/em> passed all my classes with the help of all the great instructors here at Goodwin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uplifting interactions with professors and peers <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cGoodwin professors are friendly, knowledgeable about the subjects they teach, ready to assist their students, and passionate about helping me succeed,\u201d Eliassaint credited.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his most memorable instructors, he recalled, \u201cI can still remember what one of my clinical educators said to me during rotation: \u2018Stay positive, Carmelot, you can do this! You will be a nurse in one month \u2014 fight like one.<\/em>\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI valued my relationships with my cohort, too,\u201d Eliassaint revealed. \u201cWe carpooled to save money on gas throughout clinical rotations, and we got together outside of school \u2014 celebrating good grades on hard tests by going out to lunch and dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Practicum experience preparing for professional expertise\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBefore seeing real patients, I practiced my skills in Goodwin\u2019s simulation lab, where I learned the basics of nursing by working with manikins that function like real patients,\u201d Eliassaint enlightened. \u201cThe manikins had heart tones, palpable pulses, their chests rose and fell to simulate breathing, and they even had the ability to bleed and convulse. The manikins also had a monitor that showed pulse oximetry and blood pressure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI especially learned how important it is to communicate well with other nurses during a particular experience in clinical training. One day, an elderly patient had come up to me and said he had been waiting for his medication for 30 minutes. I was new to the hospital at the time, and as it turned out, the patient had dementia, and his attending nurses had already given him his medication. Thanks to proper protocols and communication, no additional medication was administered, and our team ensured the patient\u2019s safety.\u201d<\/p>\n
