{"id":8561,"date":"2021-03-31T11:15:44","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T15:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/enews\/?p=8561"},"modified":"2024-12-16T17:10:09","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T22:10:09","slug":"how-to-pay-for-college-on-your-own","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/enews\/how-to-pay-for-college-on-your-own\/","title":{"rendered":"Top Six Tips to Pay for College on Your Own"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re worried about the educational expenses that come with earning your degree, or if you want to combat the \u201cbroke college student\u201d stereotype, read below for tricks to best evaluate your educational finances so you can focus on what matters most: your future career.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>For starters, fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/fafsa-application\"><strong>FAFSA<\/strong><\/a><strong>)\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Completing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/fafsa-application\">FAFSA<\/a> could allow you to receive federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/financial-aid-grants\">grants<\/a>, student loans, and work-study opportunities.<\/li>\n<li><em>Be sure to fill out your FAFSA as soon as possible!\u00a0<\/em>Awards given to applicants for most programs are on a first-come, first-served basis.<\/li>\n<li>FAFSA applications typically take three hours to complete, and there is no income cut-off to apply.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The application opens on October 1<\/strong>\u00a0of each year, and students should be cognizant of the deadline to submit listed on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\">FAFSA\u2019s official website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If you are a student whose guardian(s) claim you on their tax returns as a dependent, you will need your social security number (SSN), the SSN of your caretaker(s), information on their income, assets based on tax returns, W-2s, investments, and untaxed income.\n<ul>\n<li>Your guardian(s) are not legally required to pay for your college education. Submitting their financial information on your FAFSA is not a binding agreement for your guardians to pay for college. However, adding your guardian\u2019s data will increase your chances of receiving financial aid assistance. The same year, 52% of undergraduate students received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/federal-pell-grants\">Pell Grants<\/a> to help pay for college, and Goodwin University provided 4.9 million dollars in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/institutional-scholarships\">institutional scholarships<\/a> to students overall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Seek out the best student loans for you<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/types-of-student-loans\">Student loans<\/a>\u00a0are loans that require repayment. Using a student loan calculator can help to determine the borrowing costs of your college education.<\/li>\n<li>If you need to take out loans, it\u2019s best to start with\u00a0<strong>federal loans.\u00a0<\/strong>Federal loans generally offer lower interest rates than private loans, do not require a credit check, and also give access to income-driven repayment plans and loan forgiveness programs, if needed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Federal Subsidized Loans\u00a0<\/strong>are ideal<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>because they do not accrue interest (<em>meaning, interest is not added to the loan balance<\/em>) if you aren\u2019t making payments.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/direct-subsidized-student-loans\">Subsidized loans<\/a>\u00a0may also be forgiven if you are employed in specific public service careers for an extended amount of time. However, it is essential to note that there is an exception for first-time borrowers of direct subsidized loans, which places a cap on the amount of time during which a student is eligible to receive subsidized loans and the length of time the interest will be backed.<\/li>\n<li>With<strong>\u00a0Federal Unsubsidized Loans,\u00a0<\/strong>interest accrues from the time the school distributes the loan. If the student loan borrower does not pay the interest as it compiles, then the interest is added to the loan balance (also known as capitalized). If the student is actively attending school at least half-time, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/direct-unsubsidized-student-loans\">federal unsubsidized loan<\/a>\u00a0interest amount accrued is zero.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Federal Plus Loans\u00a0<\/strong>are for dependent students, parents, or graduate professionals whose grants, loans, and scholarship awards do not cover their remaining college costs. With a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/federal-plus-loans\">federal plus loan<\/a>, an applicant can\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentaid.gov\/\">apply<\/a>\u00a0using their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/fafsa-id\">FAFSA ID<\/a>\u00a0and complete a preapproval form to check financial eligibility. If the loan is approved, an applicant can take out the loan to satisfy the remaining balance. If the federal plus loan is denied, the student will automatically be eligible for up to\u00a0<strong>$4,000<\/strong>\u00a0of additional Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Funds. An applicant may also appeal a denial decision or reapply with an endorser.<\/li>\n<li>Only take out\u00a0<strong>private loans<\/strong>\u00a0as a last resort to fill in the gaps. If you take out a private loan, you will first need to pass a credit check. Once that step is complete, you should find a lender with the lowest interest rate and flexible repayment plans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Work while in school\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/federal-work-study\">Federal work-study<\/a> provides part-time work for students who seek additional income to pay for higher education costs. Work-study students must adhere to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/satisfactory-academic-progress\">Satisfactory Academic Progress<\/a>\u00a0(SAP) requirements to be eligible.<\/li>\n<li>Students may also pick up side jobs \u2014 making money editing papers, tutoring peers, creating crafty gifts, or providing music lessons to other learners.<\/li>\n<li>If a student works off-campus full-time while attending school, they might qualify for tuition reimbursement through their job. Tuition assistance programs typically reimburse employees at the end of a school term for achieving a minimum grade point average (GPA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong>Save, budget, and monitor your spending\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/glossary\/student-budgeting\">Student budgeting<\/a>\u00a0is essential to support your college experience.
