This levy made it legally required <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for many<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> printed materials <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> made on stamped paper <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">produced<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> solely in London, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">rendering<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> it impossible for colonists to pass messages without commissioned stamp distributors collecting monies <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">first<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hand.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Most colonists <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">weren\u2019t initially concerned about<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the tedious taxations. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">But <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">as time carried on and conflict continued, colonists began to rebel, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">protesting that the Parliament did not have <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the right to tax them without colonial government representation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">struggle<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> between Great Britain and colonists <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">escalated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in 1770 when British troops killed five <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">colonists<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in the \u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Boston Massacre<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Colonists also <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">opposed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the Parliament during\u00a0 <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">T<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">he\u202f<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Boston Tea Party<\/span><\/b> <span data-contrast=\"none\">on December<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> 16,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">1773, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">when the British government sanctioned a mono<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">poly on tea through the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tea Act<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Here<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">colonists<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> objected<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ct by disguising<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> as Mohawk Indians<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">in the Boston Harbor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Residents of Massachusetts then<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> boarded three British tea ships<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> dump<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ed<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">342 chests of tea into its waters<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Intolerable Acts further<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the prospect for independence<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To punish Massachusetts colonists for their defia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nce among Boston harbor\u2019s docks, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Britain <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">then <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">retaliated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> against colonists, passing a series of acts, now known as the \u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Intolerable Acts<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fthat denied residents many of their accustomed rights.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In 1774, British <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">reactive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> restrictions on the rights of Massachusetts colonists <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">accelerated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> when Parliament closed the port of Boston through the\u202f <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Boston Port Act<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Additional acts of vengeance<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">enforced by the British included the\u202f <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Massachusetts Government Act<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, which set Massachusetts under the British government\u2019s control, assembling all governmental positions to be appointed by the Parliament. This act also limited town meetings to one per year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Among other vengeful actions in effect<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> by the British<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> was the\u202f <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Administration of Justice Act<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, which allowed the trials of accused court officials to take place in the UK if not deemed a fair trial in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Massachusetts. The act specified<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> that witnesses in the trail would be reimbursed for travel to the United Kingdom. Still, the law omitted reimbursement for lost earnings, leaving little colonists the option to testify. George Washington coined this constraint the \u201cMurder Act\u201d because he believed it allowed British officials to hassle and harass Americans and escape justice across the Atlantic.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Moreover, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he first Quartering Act required local American colonies to provide British soldiers with shelter and food; if they didn\u2019t, punishment could <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lawfully<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> prevail. When colonial legislatures persistently proved uncooperative in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the act<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> implementation, the revised \u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Quartering Act<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f permitting soldiers to receive housing elsewhere<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In defense of the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">unlawful acts placed upon <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">colonists<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, a convention of delegates from various British American colonies formed the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1774, condemning the monarchy\u2019s movements and British bullying tactics.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">The words that changed the world\u202f<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">When the beginning battles of the Revolutionary War took place in April 1775, few colonists wanted complete liberty from Great Britain. However, with hostility from Parliament <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">cultivating quickly, and with British armed forces bringing death and destruction in masses, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">considerations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of a revolution seemed like the only real answer for colonists.\u202f \u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In January 1776, a man by the name of\u202f <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Thomas Paine <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202ftook his <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">contemplations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of rebellion and created a published a 50-page pamphlet <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">called<\/span> <b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cCommon Sense.\u201d\u202f<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">In this work, though prose and persuasive measures, Paine projected his passion for patriotism and advocated independence from Great Britain with allure. In the text, Thomas Paine encouraged equality of the 13 colonies, and through his carefully constructed call to action, ignited inspiration for our nation\u2019s independence.\u202f \u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Our c<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">ountry\u2019s <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Continental Congress c<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">ontinued<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On June 7, 1776, the Second Continental Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House, where Virginian representative <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Richard Henry Lee<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> introduced a proper motion for the 13 colonies\u2019 freedom. After much delegate debate, the Congress postponed <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lee\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> proposal.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fNevertheless,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> with growing support <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the separation from the kingdom, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">on July 2, 1776, Congress <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">officially<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">voted in favor of independence from Great Britain.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fOn July 4, Congress appointed a five-person committee (<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Thomas Jefferson<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f of Virginia,\u202f <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">John Adams<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f of Massachusetts,\u202f <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Roger Sherman<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f of Connecticut,\u202f <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Benjamin Franklin <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fof Pennsylvania, and\u202f <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Robert R. Livingston<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f of New York) to draft a formal statement <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">inclusive of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">all reasoning <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">tied to the desire for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> a life of liberty. Written by Thomas Jefferson, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">we<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> would later come to know<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> this document<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> as the \u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Declaration of Independence.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Once the committee had the go-ahead to air their apprehensions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> on the aristocratic rule<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, they listed 27 grievances against King George III in the declaration. Accusing King George III, in detail, for his actions of \u201cabsolute tyranny over the states.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">A few i<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">llustrations of specific grievances against King George III<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">in the Declaration of Independence include:<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fGrievance #2:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f \u201cHe has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Grievance #5:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f \u201cInvasions on the rights of people.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Grievance #8:\u202f <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cObstruction of justice.\u201d\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Grievance #9:\u202f <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cMade judges dependent on his Will alone for their offices\u2019 tenure and the amount and payment of their salaries.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Grievance #16:\u202f <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cFor cutting off our trade with all parts of the world,\u201d after acts were passed restricting trade with Spanish and French colonies, ultimately cutting off goods and revenue for colonists.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Grievance #17: <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fIn addition to the Stamp Act and taxation on tea, duties were also placed on paper, painter\u2019s colors, glass, and various other goods.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Grievance #18:\u202f <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cDepriving [citizens] in many cases, the benefit of trial by jury.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Grievance #24:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f Several naval assaults were made on colonies, and Lord Dunmore was ordered the seizure of American merchant vessels. \u201cHe has plundered our seas, ravaged our coast, burnt our towns, and destroyed our people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">After making 86 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">small <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">edits to Thomas Jefferson\u2019s first draft, Congress approved the Declaration of Independence.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Contrary to popularized <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">depictions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, most delegates were not in the room at once, and many representatives did not even sign the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Declaration of Independence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> until August 2.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Emancipation from an empire, a revolutionary event to remember\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Before the American Revolutionary War, residents of the 13 original colonies would hold an array of annual celebrations for the king of Great Britain\u2019s birthday. Amusements included bonfires, the ringing of bells, parades, and various public speakers.\u202f \u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">But starting in the summer of 1776, after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, new traditions began to take way. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">o c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">elebrate America\u2019s independence, c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">olonists created customs <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> holding mock memorials for King George III, services that symbolized <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">America\u2019s<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">freedom from the United Kingdom <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and the launch of a new nation founded on liberty.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fourth of July f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">estivities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to follow<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> comprised of concerts, the firing of cannons and muskets, and public readings of the Declaration of Independence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On July 8, 1776,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> four days after <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the document\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> implementation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the Declaration of Independence was read aloud<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in front of local militia troops in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Igniting fireworks on Independence Day<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The foundation of Independence Day firework displays began in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, during the first organized occasion observing Independence Day. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n the state\u2019s community<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Commons, cannons fired a 13-gun sa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lute to start and end the event, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">honor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> America\u2019s 13 colonies.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">An elegant dinner was also served to Independence Day supporters, along with entertainment that encompassed military demonstrations and merriment music to compliment the momentous festivities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The same night, a secret revolutionary organization called the \u201cSons of Liberty,\u201d founded by Samuel Adams, simultaneously set off another firework display over <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Boston Common, both cities beautifully illuminated by the bountiful patriotic possibilities to come.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On June 28, 1870, Congress established Independence Day as an official federal holiday.<\/span><span
