{"id":6703,"date":"2020-02-26T10:34:14","date_gmt":"2020-02-26T15:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/enews\/?p=6703"},"modified":"2024-12-16T10:20:50","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T15:20:50","slug":"serena-seepersaud-ctra-success-story-part-two","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/enews\/serena-seepersaud-ctra-success-story-part-two\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Success Story: Serena Seepersaud, Part Two"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Student Success Story: Serena Seepersaud, Part Two<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>CTRA: A magnet school attracting amazing scholars<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Before being accepted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctriveracademy.org\">Connecticut River Academy<\/a> (CTRA), Serena Seepersaud was a student in one of the largest public school districts in Connecticut. In a conversation in Goodwin University\u2019s student lounge, Serena openly shared the differences between her public school experience and her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctriveracademy.org\/prospective-families\/benefits-of-a-magnet-school\">magnet school education.<\/a> \u201cFirst of all, the buildings were completely different,\u201d Serena started. \u201cThe public school I attended had a brick exterior, small windows, and chipped paint. There wasn\u2019t a lot of light that came into the classrooms, and the class sizes were big with a lot of students crammed inside. We were only learning out of textbooks, and there was nothing digital or online. But when I went to CTRA, it was completely different,\u201d Serena recalled. \u201cI remember looking around the magnet school and wondering why there were so many windows and why it was so bright, happy, and cheerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCTRA instilled a lot of confidence in me,\u201d Serena stated proudly. \u201cWith the small class sizes, you got to form relationships with your teachers. The support network was so strong \u2014 the teachers, administration, and everyone continuously checked up on me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serena recalled an unforgettable moment she shared with one particular teacher. \u201cI was always striving for an A-minus,\u201d Serena began. \u201cAnd one day my teacher approached me and said \u2018A-minus is a good grade, but why are you settling for that when you know that you can get an A-plus?\u2019 I was speechless. He was right, and that really stuck with me,\u201d she remembered. \u201cI had the capabilities to reach that, but I wasn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctriveracademy.org\/about\/standards-and-habits-of-mind\">aiming for accuracy<\/a>, I wasn\u2019t striving for success, and from that point on, my grades got even better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only did Serena\u2019s grades improve, her self-assurance did, as well. \u201cWhen I started freshman year, I was really shy and turtle-like. I didn\u2019t want to get out of my shell, I didn\u2019t like to participate in class, and I didn\u2019t like to share my opinions. I kept to myself and had a small group of friends,\u201d Serena readily admitted. \u201cAnd toward the end of my school year, and even after graduating, I realized that I have important things to contribute. I think that had a lot to do with teachers encouraging me,\u201d she noted. \u201cThey gave me the skills to recognize that the things I have to say are of value and that I should feel free to voice them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCTRA is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,\u201d Serena made it a point to mention. \u201cIt\u2019s so different from any other school I\u2019ve been to. There were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctriveracademy.org\/current-students\/project-center\">so many resources<\/a> and there was such a heavy focus on the students. Everyone made sure the scholars were on the right track to graduate, and they genuinely cared about each and every student there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a part of the high school\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctriveracademy.org\/prospective-families\/early-college-high-school\">early college model<\/a>, Serena walked across CTRA\u2019s commencement stage with 30 college credits (equivalent to her entire freshman year) earned tuition-free. \u201cAs a sophomore, we were required to take 099, a course specifically designed to prepare students for college,\u201d Serena described. \u201cTeachers instructed us on classroom settings, expectations, and college material \u2014 and that helped me a lot. I felt prepared, and more than anything, I was excited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eager to continue her scholastic success, Serena transferred her credits to Goodwin University and is currently earning her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/majors\/business-administration\/as-degree\">associate degree in Business Administration<\/a>. \u201cClasses are flexible here,\u201d Serena specified. \u201cI work full time and Goodwin has online classes and night classes that are really helpful. Being able to do my work whenever I have the time is perfect. I don\u2019t think I would have been able to go to school if not for that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/majors\/business-administration\/flexibility\">flexibility<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serena is studying at Goodwin with the goal of becoming a travel blogger, or a teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL) to children from foreign countries. A fan of Korean soap operas, Korean food, and anything with soy sauce and ginger, Serena hopes to start her adventures in South Korea. An admirer of the sounds and cadence of the Korean language, Serena loves the idea of working abroad and being pushed out of her comfort zone.
