After celebrating 20 years of\nempowering hard-working students to become sought-after employees, Goodwin\nCollege kicked off 2020 by announcing that it will become Goodwin University effective\nimmediately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecoming Goodwin University is a\nnatural progression for our institution, our faculty, our staff, our supporters,\nand most of all, our students,\u201d said Goodwin University President Mark\nScheinberg. \u201cOver the past two decades, Goodwin has evolved from a technology\ntraining center into a leading nonprofit institution of higher learning that offers\ncertificate programs as well as associate, bachelor\u2019s, and master\u2019s degrees. Not\nonly does \u2018University\u2019 better reflect our range of offerings, it advances our mission\nto make a quality, career-focused education more accessible to a greater number\nof students. It also offers new opportunities for focused research that\nsupports access, workforce, and community issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past 20 years, both the\nschool\u2019s array of programs and its enrollment have continually expanded. In the\npast decade alone, enrollment has increased nearly 110%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three Schools of Goodwin University<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the transition to Goodwin\nUniversity, Goodwin has reorganized its five academic departments under three\nschools. These schools will be led by current department chairs who have been elevated\nto deans to better reflect their responsibility for creating partnerships\nwithin the institution and community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goodwin University will consist of the\nSchool of Nursing and Health Professions<\/strong> led by Dean Dr. Paula Dowd; the\nSchool of Business Technology and Advanced Manufacturing<\/strong> led by Dean Dr.\nCliff Thermer; and the School\nof Applied Liberal Arts and Social Sciences <\/strong>led by Dean Dr. Diana\nLaRocco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese three schools reflect our key\nstrengths in helping students prepare for in-demand careers in growing economic\nsectors,\u201d said Goodwin University Provost Dr. Danielle Wilken. \u201cThis well-defined\nstructure will break down silos and provide faculty with more opportunities to\ncollaborate on curriculum, course design, and staffing to provide even more\nrobust offerings for more Goodwin students. In addition, the schools recognize\nthe growth that we have experienced and better reflect the depth and breadth of\nour credentials and content areas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Innovative Approach to Learning <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goodwin\nUniversity is also one of the world\u2019s first universities to adopt an innovative\ninstructional approach that transforms the way in which faculty teach and\nstudents learn. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) recognizes that traditional\nteaching methods have not kept pace with the fact that university students have\nbecome more diverse in terms of age, race, ethnicity, and learning ability.\nGoodwin University faculty are given rigorous training on this new approach to\nteaching that doesn\u2019t ask students to conform to traditional, outdated teaching\nstrategies but instead embraces each student as an individualized learner. UDL\nempowers a more inclusive array of students and educators to be successful and\nencourages flexibility in the way students access material, engage with it and demonstrate\ntheir command of the newly learned knowledge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019, Goodwin University\nestablished the Goodwin\nUniversity Institute for Learning Innovation<\/a> (GUILI) to develop and implement transformative\nlearning for students and faculty. Goodwin University is also expanding its UDL\nmodel outside the classroom to departments including Admissions and Academic Advising.\nGoodwin University plans to infuse UDL into Goodwin University magnet schools\nas well, becoming the first institution with a pre-school through graduate UDL\neducation model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGoodwin is a pioneer in the university-wide\nadoption of UDL in post-secondary education. Our \u2018no labels\u2019 approach to UDL is\nunique because we view it as a method for teaching and learning that benefits\neveryone,\u201d said Dr. LaRocco who also\nserves as the Executive Director for GUILI.\n\u201cSince we began incorporating\nUDL principles into our curricula in 2016, we\u2019ve had a tremendously positive\nresponse from both students and faculty as well as measurable increases in test\nscores in our pilot programs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Partnering to Develop Connecticut\u2019s\nWorkforce<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the Goodwin name and logo will change,\nits commitment to serving the community of Greater Hartford, the State of\nConnecticut, and the region\u2019s businesses is unwavering. For two decades,\nGoodwin University has partnered with state, municipal, and business leaders to\nfill skills gaps across Connecticut. In 2018 alone, most of Goodwin graduates were employed\nwithin six months of graduation and over 90 percent were employed in\nConnecticut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2003, Goodwin played a pivotal role\nin solving the state\u2019s nursing shortage by launching its registered nursing program.\nSince then, more than 2,200 nursing students have graduated from Goodwin, most going\non to work for Connecticut hospitals and health systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goodwin\nUniversity is also focused on addressing the need for skilled manufacturing workers.\nIt will continue to work closely with state officials and business leaders to grow\nR&D capabilities in Connecticut\u2019s manufacturing sector and prepare students\nfrom middle school through college for manufacturing careers \u2014 both in the\nclassroom and through practical on-the-job training. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cManufacturing is vital to our state\u2019s\neconomy. Goodwin University continues to offer valuable job training and\nlearning opportunities to students in Connecticut, helping to bridge the\nmanufacturing skills gap in the state, which boosts employment in the First\nDistrict,\u201d said Congressman John Larson (CT 1st district).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goodwin University has also forged a workforce\ndevelopment partnership with the Town of East Hartford and Capital Workforce\nPartners to provide resources to job seekers and employers through the American\nJob Center. In 2019, the American Job Center opened a\nfull-service branch on the Goodwin campus to further strengthen Goodwin\nUniversity\u2019s commitment to the employability of their graduates and the Greater\nHartford community.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goodwin University in the Community<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goodwin University continues to deepen\nits roots in the community of East Hartford. Its campus is on the site of a\nformer blighted riverside property which it helped to transform into a vibrant\neducational center. Most recently, Goodwin University began a construction\nproject that will revitalize the area around its South Main Street campus and\nbring in commercial and retail businesses, services and jobs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
