However, there is still the need for <strong>more<\/strong> \u2013 more\nskilled, qualified workers to support and grow this booming field. According to\na <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbia.com\/resources\/economy\/manufacturing\/2019-connecticut-manufacturing-report\/\">new\nCBIA survey<\/a>, 60% of Connecticut manufacturers say expanding the workforce is\ntheir <strong>most immediate need<\/strong>. However, the vast majority (89%) remark that\nrecruiting and hiring new workers is also their biggest challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cConnecticut continues to face a critical shortage of\nskilled workers,\u201d says the CBIA. Experienced workers are retiring, and others\nare soon to retire, with 60% of workers being over age 40. Why is it so\ndifficult to find young manufacturing minds? &nbsp;One-third of manufacturers say it\u2019s because\nthey lack skills or expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an aspiring individual looking to enter the field of\nmanufacturing, you can rest assured there is a <strong><em>ton<\/em><\/strong> of opportunity\n\u2013 as long as you have the skills and qualifications necessary for the role.\nToday, manufacturing employers are seeking candidates with strong skills in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>STEM (science, technology, engineering, and\nmath)<\/li><li>Communication <\/li><li>Complex problem-solving<\/li><li>Critical thinking<\/li><li>Tool and die<\/li><li>Creativity<\/li><li>Programming<\/li><li>Automation maintenance<\/li><li>Machine learning<\/li><li>Data analytics<\/li><li>Customer service<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now the question remains, what are the educational\nrequirements needed to get into the field? After all, it is education and\nexperience that will allow you to obtain the above skillsets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturing education requirements vary by company, job\ntitle, and responsibilities in the role. For example, entry-level machinists\nmay be able to find work with a high school diploma. However, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/enews\/how-to-become-a-cnc-machinist\/\">become a CNC\nmachinist<\/a>, you typically need postsecondary training (through a certificate\nor degree program) before entering the field. Meanwhile, advanced positions \u2013\nsuch as an Inspection Supervisor, Quality Manager, or Manufacturing Engineer \u2013\nwill usually require a bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Connecticut, only about one-third of employers are\nlooking to hire applicants with a technical high school degree. 42 percent of\nemployers, however, are seeking candidates with postsecondary education under\ntheir belts, such as intensive training at the college-level and college\ncertificate programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Manufacturing Education Requirements Checklist<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are ready to launch your career in manufacturing, and\nwish to stand out to prospective employers, you will want to check a few key\nitems off your to-do list:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>A college certificate or degree<\/strong>: <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To be seen as a valuable worker today\n\u2014 and especially to be considered for advancement \u2014 it&#8217;s no longer enough to be\nable to run a machine. Some manufacturing careers now require a college degree\nor postsecondary certificate in a dedicated field of study. And if employers do\nnot require it, they do recommend it (and may choose applicants with education,\nover those without). Postsecondary training at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/majors\/manufacturing\/\">manufacturing and\nmachining college<\/a> can give you the competencies and experience needed to\nsucceed in your career.
