They also educate patients,\nfamilies, and the public about various health conditions and treatment plans,\nand provide emotional support to patients and family members in need. Due to\nthe scope of their role, Registered Nurses have one of the most important, and in-demand,\njobs out there today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When many people think of a Registered Nurse, they think of\nthe nurses bustling about the hospital or doctor\u2019s office \u2013 the ones\nadministering medication, taking vitals, talking with family members,\nmonitoring patient conditions. What many do not realize, however, is that there\nare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/enews\/types-of-nurses\/\">many types of\nnurses<\/a> out there, and many specialized tasks that the various nurses can\ndo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/enews\/how-to-become-a-registered-nurse\/\">becoming\na Registered Nurse<\/a>, you likely have some idea of the type of career you\nwish to take on. You may want to work in certain environment (e.g. a private\npractice) or with a specific demographic (e.g. the elderly, or expectant\nmothers). You may also want to work with patients who have certain conditions,\nsuch as cancer or substance use issues. Within the registered nursing field,\nall these career paths are obtainable \u2013 and more! Below, we outline some of the\ntop Registered Nurse specialties you can pursue today, depending on which nursing\ndegree you pursue first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Registered Nurse Specialties with an\nAssociate Degree in Nursing (ADN)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Critical Care<\/strong>: If you desire a career\nthat is fast-paced, where there is always something new, a critical care\nspecialization may just be for you. Critical care nurses typically work in\nhospitals on emergency room, trauma, and intensive care floors. They work with\npatients who are in dire need of care and treatment, particularly those with\nlife-threatening conditions. <\/li><li><strong>Dialysis<\/strong>: Dialysis is a nursing specialization\nthat involves treating patients with kidney failure, who require regular\ndialysis procedures to clean their blood. Dialysis nurses specifically evaluate\npatients before each procedure, ensure their safety, and perform assessments\none the treatment is complete. <\/li><li><strong>Pain Management<\/strong>: Much like the name\nimplies, pain management nurses are responsible for treating patients with\nchronic or acute pain (which is a lot of patients!). Pain management nurses can\nbecome specialized by earning certification through the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aspmn.org\/Pages\/default.aspx\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Society\nfor Pain Management Nursing<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Trauma Nursing<\/strong>: Specialized trauma nurses\ntreat patients in recovery from physical traumas. This may be a head trauma\nfrom a car accident, a gunshot wound, or physical or sexual abuse. Due to the\nhigh demand of their career, trauma nurses have the potential to earn more than\nmany RNs, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/nursejournal.org\/community\/20-best-nursing-career-specialties-for-the-future\/\">Nurse\nJournal<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Medical<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>Surgical Nursing<\/strong>: Medical-surgical\nnursing is the largest nursing specialty in the United States, at the associate\ndegree level especially. RNs in this specialty practice in hospitals primarily,\nworking with a variety of patients in need. To earn the medical-surgical nurse\nspecialization through the American Nurses Credentialing Center, you simply\nneed to be an active and licensed RN \u2013 with 2,000 hours of experience in the\nspecialty \u2013 during the last 3 years.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Registered Nurse Specialties with a\nBachelor\u2019s in Nursing (BSN)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Psychiatry<\/strong>: Nurses specializing in psychiatry have an interest in helping patients with mental illness \u2013 including depression, anxiety, PTSD, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and more. Psychiatric nurses work in hospitals and inpatient facilities (such as addiction rehab centers) to help keep patients safe and comfortable. They may also work in specialized nursing homes or in-home care settings, treating patients with Alzheimer\u2019s and dementia.<\/li><li><strong>Informatics Nursing:<\/strong> For aspiring nurses who also have an interest in data and technology, an Informatics specialization could be for you. Informatics nurses use their care experiences to determine how technology can better help patients in need. They inform hospitals, medical staff, practitioners, and companies of new healthcare technology and developments.<\/li><li><strong>Neonatal Nursing:<\/strong> Neonatal nurses work with patients as they give birth, and directly after birth. In this RN specialty, you can work on labor and delivery, or in the post-partum units, caring for mothers and their babies. Neonatal nurses can also work in intensive care units, caring for babies who are ill, or premature, and who require extended treatment.<\/li><li><strong>Oncology: <\/strong>Oncology nurses care for patients who have been diagnosed with cancer. They aide patients with pain control, treatment options, side effects, and coping with the disease. They also help educate and support families with loved ones battling cancer. Due to the many types of cancer out there, there are many different certifications you can pursue in Oncology nursing. For example:<ul><li>Oncology Certified Nurse (ONC\u00ae)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse (CPHON\u00ae)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Certified Breast Care Nurse (CBCN\u00ae)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Blood and Marrow Transplant Certified Nurse (BMTCN\u00ae)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Advanced Oncology Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (AOCNS\u00ae)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Nurses are a special breed of healthcare professionals, with\nmany growth and credentialing opportunities available.
