Goodwin College and Creative Development, LLC:<\/strong> Community Partnerships and the Chapter 126 Occupational Therapy Assistant Program <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since January 2019, students enrolled in Goodwin College\u2019s\nOccupational Therapy Assistant Program have been pairing with Creative\nDevelopment, LLC, an occupational therapy company for children, Chapter 126 to\ncomplete their clinical internships. The OTA clinical program meets at Chapter\n126 Sports & Fitness site, an adaptive recreational center for those with\nphysical disabilities. In this community-centered internship program, Goodwin\nOTA interns address an array of client health and wellness concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cChapter 126 was\nfantastic!\u201d <\/em>Casey Saunders of the Goodwin College OTA Program shared. \u201cI had the opportunity to interact with a\nvariety of groups that had different limitations and needs\u2026We worked on\nbuilding relationships with the clients to help them feel more comfortable\u2026\nmodeling the task at hand while standing next to them to ensure their safety\nand understanding.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Affiliating with Creative Development, LLC provides studentsthe opportunity to work with exercise\nphysiologists, fitness professionals, teachers, paraprofessionals, and\norganizations like The Miracle League to serve locals with limitations and\ndisabilities. Supervised by seasoned occupational therapists, students are able\nto apply the skills they learned across their academic curriculum at Goodwin.\nDuring their clinical internships, students are able to observe, evaluate, and\ncomplete home assessments\u2014 recommending environmental and equipment changes. They\nalso have the opportunity to work with clients on abilities like fine motor\nskills, balance, and strength. Interns completing their OTA clinicals also\nfacilitate participation in veteran\u2019s programs and, with experienced staff, co-lead\ngroups to improve the conditioning of clients with conditions like Alzheimer\u2019s\ndisease and Multiple Sclerosis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would recommend Chapter 126 to any student,\u201d <\/em>Alan Riopelli Jr, COTA\/L endorsed. \u201c[The\nprogram] opens your eyes and mind to a whole different world beyond regular\ntherapy. The experience at Chapter 126 really made me think outside the box\u2026 In\nthe small amount of time I was there, I feel I helped the client’s\u2026 facilitate\nand maximize their independence. Chapter 126 was an extraordinary experience.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
