This fall, a new memorial honoring the more than 30,000 Connecticut men and women who have given their lives in military service will be installed on the campus of Goodwin College in East Hartford. The \u201cConnecticut Fallen Star Memorial\u201d is the creation of Maryland sculptor Will Hemsley. The centerpiece, a star more than 20 feet tall and partially imbedded in the earth, pays tribute to the fallen heroes, while the surrounding bronze figures of a man, woman, and child honor Connecticut Gold Star families.<\/p>\n
At the urging of Congressman John B. Larson, a volunteer, non-profit committee was formed comprising veterans, government officials, business representatives, Gold Star families, educators, and others to secure the location and raise the funds to create the memorial and provide for its perpetual upkeep.<\/p>\n
\u201cFreedom has a price,\u201d Larson stated. \u201cWe must never forget the immense sacrifice that Connecticut\u2019s bravest military and first responders have made for our state and our country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Having seen a memorial tribute created by Hemsley in another state, Larson vowed to create a site for Connecticut\u2019s fallen. \u201cWe must always be mindful of their service, and the pain and loss of their families. This beautiful memorial is but a small gesture to express our deep gratitude,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Delivery of the memorial is expected in October. Installation will be on Goodwin\u2019s Pent Road campus, adjacent to a new manufacturing complex being designed specifically for high school students.<\/p>\n
A dedication ceremony is planned onsite on Saturday, November 9, beginning at 1 p.m. At press time, expected guest speakers included Congressman Larson, Connecticut Commissioner of Veterans Affairs Thomas Saadi, Goodwin President Mark Scheinberg, and Connecticut National Guard Adjutant General Francis J. Evon, Jr., as well as a number of veterans and Gold Star family members. A reception is scheduled to follow at the College. There is no cost to attend the event and the public and members of the media are welcome.<\/p>\n
