{"id":4631,"date":"2018-05-10T13:59:28","date_gmt":"2018-05-10T17:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/enews\/?p=4631"},"modified":"2025-01-06T12:37:01","modified_gmt":"2025-01-06T17:37:01","slug":"project-worth-young-adult-academy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/enews\/project-worth-young-adult-academy\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcoming Project Worth Young Adult Academy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Goodwin Welcomes Project Worth Young Adult Academy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 2017 fall semester brought a new community partnership program to campus, forming a unique synergy between Goodwin College\u2019s Facilities Department and Project Worth Young Adult Academy, a program of South Windsor Public Schools. Project Worth is a transitional opportunity for young adults, 18 to 21, with special needs, who have completed high school and are preparing to move on to an adult agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a vocationally based program,\u201d said <strong>Sarah Wadsworth<\/strong>, South Windsor special education teacher. \u201cWe collaborate with community organizations to help our students access work experience and build their life skills. It\u2019s a positive way to help young adults prepare for what\u2019s next in their lives and to be part of a college community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Word of Goodwin\u2019s experience in community building originally led Project Worth to the College and into discussions with Vice President for Academic Affairs <strong>Danielle Wilken<\/strong>, Assistant Vice President for Facilities <strong>Dan Larson<\/strong>, and Director of Custodial Operations <strong>Ray Maselek<\/strong>, who all recognized the possibility of forming a partnership in which the students would become part of the Facilities team and learn what it means to join the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince we were creating something new to us, we put a lot of thought into what the Project Worth students\u2019 responsibilities would entail,\u201d Maselek said. \u201cWe wanted it to be a positive experience for them, and to coordinate with the schedules and duties of our Facilities team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, the first two Project Worth students came to the Riverside campus. Student <strong>Brenden Prattson<\/strong> was supervised by custodian <strong>Tim Perkins<\/strong> at the Riverside Magnet School. <strong>Maya Sparks<\/strong> was directed by lead custodian <strong>Amerfi Roman<\/strong> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/magnet-schools\/connecticut-river-academy\/\">Connecticut River Academy<\/a>. Both students also worked at the main campus building under the supervision of <strong>Ismael Roman<\/strong>, Supervisor of College Buildings, and <strong>Esteban Romero<\/strong>, Goodwin custodian. Overseeing the program was <strong>Samantha Allard<\/strong>, Project Worth job coach.<\/p>\n<p>Also involved in the project was <strong>Casey Kennedy<\/strong>, a student in Goodwin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/majors\/occupational-therapy-assistant\/\">Occupational Therapy Assistant program<\/a>. \u201cProject Worth has a partnership with the OTA program at Goodwin in which we serve a clinical site,\u201d Wadsworth explained. \u201cUnder the supervision of a Goodwin OT, OTA students spend eight weeks working with us to fulfill part of their program requirements. Project Worth students get the benefit of their OT knowledge along with the chance to interact with college-aged peers. It&#8217;s a win-win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone involved in this first venture considers it a success.
