{"id":3697,"date":"2017-05-05T10:32:15","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T14:32:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/enews\/?p=3697"},"modified":"2025-01-06T14:08:15","modified_gmt":"2025-01-06T19:08:15","slug":"universal-design-for-learning-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/enews\/universal-design-for-learning-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Davis Educational Foundation Grant Brings Universal Design for Learning Workshop to Goodwin College"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, May 3, Goodwin College hosted a day-long educational workshop on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people, based on scientific insights into how humans learn. Staff from CAST, a nonprofit education research and development organization based in Wakefield, Massachusetts, facilitated the day-long workshop for full- and part-time faculty, held at Goodwin\u2019s Business and Manufacturing Center in East Hartford.<\/p>\n<p>A $129,788 three-year grant, awarded to the College in November 2016, made the professional development experience possible. The grant was received from the Davis Educational Foundation established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after Mr. Davis\u2019s retirement as chairman of Shaw\u2019s Supermarkets, Inc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an honor to be awarded a grant from the Davis Educational Foundation,\u201d said Marion Leonard, Goodwin\u2019s Senior Director for Grants and Planned Giving. \u201cThe Goodwin College\/Davis Foundation partnership supports our faculty\u2019s professional development that is critical to creating an environment where all students can learn and succeed academically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The partnership will likely benefit other educational organizations as well. \u201cGoodwin will be the Davis Foundation\u2019s beta site to determine if other colleges and universities can benefit from adopting UDL\u2019s core components,\u201d Leonard added.<\/p>\n<p>UDL is an innovative approach to education based on cognitive neuroscience research. The UDL framework is used to develop flexible learning environments that accommodate individual differences within a student population. The concepts of inclusivity, fairness, and equity are the foundation of the UDL framework.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop consisted of several task-based challenges that encouraged innovative thinking and thoughtful discussion. The presenter, Allison Posey of CAST, effectively increased faculty understanding of UDL-based practices and provided opportunities for hands-on implementation.<\/p>\n<p>In order to better serve Goodwin students, faculty cohorts will participate in Universal Design for Learning workshops over the next few years. These cohorts will implement ongoing UDL instruction, and provide long-term, job-embedded professional development for participating faculty members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur instructors are among the most committed I\u2019ve ever worked with when it comes to supporting student learning and success,\u201d said Danielle Wilken, Goodwin\u2019s Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty. \u201cWe are extremely pleased to provide them with professional development that authentically expands their skill sets to create student-orientated classrooms that address the wide range of student abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodwin.edu\/majors\/\">academic offerings<\/a> that include certificates, associate degrees, bachelor\u2019s degrees, and the newly added master\u2019s degrees in Nursing and Organizational Leadership, Goodwin believes that UDL will increase student engagement and improve learning outcomes within its increasingly diverse student body.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/goodwincollege\/sets\/72157680238200334\">Link to flickr page<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, May 3, Goodwin College hosted a day-long educational workshop on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people, based on scientific insights into how humans learn.
