The road to becoming a nurse isn’t always a straight line.

For Ellen Kraemer, clinical instructor for Goodwin University’s associate degree in Nursing program, there were unexpected detours, self-doubt, and moments when others questioned her abilities. But through perseverance and a steadfast belief in herself, she ultimately achieved the career she’d always dreamed of — and today, she encourages her students to do the same. Meet Ellen Kraemer, RN

“I always wanted to be a nurse,” Ellen reflects.

As a high school student, she explored her interest in healthcare by joining Future Nurses and volunteering as a hospital candy striper. While she briefly considered becoming a physician, nursing was the career that continued to call to her.

Then came a conversation that nearly changed everything.

A vice principal told Ellen that she wasn’t smart enough to become a nurse — a comment that crushed her confidence and led her to pursue a different path. She enrolled at Kent State University and majored in speech and hearing therapy, but the dream of nursing never disappeared.

Years later, while living in New York, Ellen volunteered with a hospice organization. There, she met a nurse who also taught at a nursing school. Inspired once again, she enrolled in the program.

The journey wasn’t easy.

The nursing program was rigorous, and after failing a course, Ellen was dismissed. Instead of giving up, she took time to regroup before making a decision that would shape the rest of her life.

“I told my husband, ‘I’m going to go talk to the dean and see if I can come back into the program,’” she recalls.

She was readmitted, put in the work, and earned her nursing degree.

Words of wisdom

After graduation, Ellen discovered a passion for obstetrics and began her nursing career at Hartford Hospital in 1985. Decades later, she’s still inspiring the next generation of nurses — this time in the classroom.

When students ask her for advice, Ellen doesn’t focus solely on grades or technical skills. Instead, she reminds them that determination can be just as important as talent.

“If you want to do something, don’t listen to others — listen to yourself,” she says. “I’m proof of that. If you’re willing to work, you can do it.”

Her story serves as a powerful reminder that setbacks don’t define the future. With resilience, hard work, and confidence in your own abilities, it’s possible to overcome obstacles and achieve the career you’ve always imagined.
