Counseling Services

Mission

The Mission of Counseling Services is to provide you with opportunities for personal, emotional, and academic development and to help guide you towards successful completion of your college education. Additionally, in accordance with Goodwin College’s mission, counseling services seeks to foster lifelong learning and to promote civic responsibility.

Services

Free confidential, short-term, interventions and individual counseling are offered to Goodwin students.

Students who take advantage of these sessions will enjoy one-on-one relationships with a counselor or small group session and workshops on a variety of issues.

Referrals to Counseling Services can be made by faculty, staff, or self-referral. Every referral made remains confidential. Self-referral form Call or email one of our counselors listed below to make an appointment.

In-depth Personal Counseling

Our counselors are skilled at counseling students on academic and personal issues as they relate to their status as a student. If you require additional clinical counseling, your counselor may refer you to Dr. Hank Lerner, a professional licensed counselor who is available for consultation. Students who want to make an appointment with Dr. Lerner at (860) 236-4295 without first visiting with a Goodwin College Counselor may do so. Our Counselors cannot prescribe medication for students at Goodwin College (outside referrals needed).

Follow-up and Confidentiality Procedures

Students, faculty and staff can be assured that counseling sessions are confidential. The ability to share information is governed by confidentiality laws and ethics.

Emergencies

In an urgent situation that requires immediate assistance, you may contact the Intercommunity Mental Health Center (IMHC) at 860-569-5900. This crisis line is staffed 24 hours a day. If the counselors at IMHC deem it appropriate, they have the ability to send their Mobile Crisis Unit to campus to provide immediate psychological assessment, to try to de-escalate the crisis, and/or, if appropriate, facilitate psychiatric hospitalization. In emergency situations:

  • Then dial 555 to contact campus security before doing anything else.

Confidentiality

All information disclosed within sessions is confidential and may not be revealed to anyone in the Goodwin College community or outside community without my written permission. However, there are some instances where by law the counselor will need to disclose information without written permission. These instances include:

  • If I present an imminent threat of harm to myself or to others,
  • When there is an indication of abuse of a child or dependent adult,
  • If I become gravely disabled, and
  • By court subpoena.
