Ways to Reduce Costs

Cost is probably one of the first things to come to mind when considering one’s education. But financing an education doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With a little forethought, imagination, and careful planning, you and your personal Financial Aid Officer at Goodwin can make your investment in a brighter, more secure and rewarding future very manageable.

This page offers several ways Goodwin can help—and some things you can do—to bring that future within easy reach. To start, make submitting your online FAFSA application priority one. There’s even a forecasting tool (FAFSA4caster) to give you an early estimate of your federal student aid eligibility. Be sure you meet application deadlines. Please be sure to enter the Goodwin College code on your FAFSA: 015833.

Credit for Learning on the Job
Many Goodwin degree programs offer credit for your work experience. Following a year’s full-time employment in a position directly related to your Associate of Science program, you may apply for up to four (4) college credits. Check with your department chair—credits earned outside the classroom are credits you don’t have to pay for.

Credit By Examination
In certain cases, Goodwin will grant you credit when you pass a faculty-administered exam with a score of 85% or higher, covering subjects not included in the College Level Exam Program (CLEP). There is a small testing fee, but no charge for the credits received.

Advanced Placement / Credit for Experiential Learning
Goodwin makes it possible for you to gain up to 50% of your degree credits through a course-by-course assessment of your earlier learning. For example, you may have gained experience in a non-accredited or non-collegiate setting, or through work and life experiences. Contact your Department Chair or Program Director for more information.

Work-Study
One way to help pay for school is through a program of Goodwin-sponsored employment in which you earn money while attending school. The amount awarded is based on your need and the availability of funds.

Tax Credit Programs
The Hope Scholarship may provide up to $3,000 towards a Goodwin College education. If eligible, you can receive up to a $1,500 tax credit for each of the first two years of college.

The Lifelong Learning Program helps with tuition to upgrade your job skills or for career training. The tax credit equals 20% of qualified tuition and fee expenses up to $10,000 per year, for a maximum credit of $2,000 per year. For more information on these programs, consult a tax advisor or the IRS.

Save on books
There are many ways to save on textbooks:

  • Purchase international editions – It’s a little-known industry secret that they’re significantly less expensive than U.S. editions. Search for international editions at places such as abebooks.com.
  • View advertising for free textbooks – If you’re willing to view a bit of advertising, you could download textbooks for little or no charge from Freeload Press
  • Purchase electronic textbooks – Downloading your textbooks can save you up 50%.
  • Use the library – It may have several copies of the text you need, and the limited time or in-library-only use may help you to be more time-efficient.
