Phlebotomy and Laboratory Services

What is a phlebotomist?
A phlebotomist is an integral member of the medical laboratory team. Laboratory scientists, technologists, and technicians require blood specimens obtained promptly, efficiently and safely by qualified phlebotomists. They must also maintain high standards of professionalism with clients or patients. See what a Goodwin phlebotomist student does.

What training do I need?
You will be well-trained in all aspects of specimen collection and handling. To complete the certification in phlebotomy at Goodwin College, you will learn:

  • practical and theoretical skills
  • specimen processing
  • laboratory procedures
  • quality control testing.

As a graduate of Goodwin College, you will be eligible to sit for the Registered Phlebotomy Technical (RPT) exam offered by the American Medical Technologist (AMT).

Phlebotomy Internship Experience
Students will enjoy a supervised phlebotomy experience in a health-care facility or clinical laboratories. This internship provides students with opportunity to apply knowledge and skill in performing clinical phlebotomy procedures. Professional attitudes are developed by interacting with other health-care professionals and consumers.

Where will I work?
Phlebotomists work in:

  • Hospitals
  • Insurance companies
  • Clinics
  • Outpatient laboratories
  • Nursing homes
  • Physician’s offices

Are there jobs?

Employment of phlebotomists and other clinical laboratory workers is expected to grow 14 percent in the next eight years, faster than the average for all occupations. The volume of laboratory tests continues to increase with both population growth and the development of new types of tests, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The average hourly wage for phlebotomists in Connecticut is $12.00.
