Respiratory Therapists are trained to work with adult and pediatric patients including premature infants with cardio-pulmonary disorders. Respiratory Therapists perform procedures that are both diagnostic and therapeutic:

• Administering medications in aerosol form to help relieve breathlessness
• Obtain and analyze blood and sputum specimens
• Using ventilators to help patients who cannot breathe on their own
• Perform diagnostic tests for patients with sleep disorders

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Respiratory Therapists in Connecticut earned a median income of $56,930 in 2007. The demand for RT’s is expected to grow at twice the rate of the national average of all other occupations over the next 10 years.

Employment opportunities are available in a variety of settings:

• Acute care hospitals
• Rehabilitation and long term care facilities
• Homecare settings
• Life Star air ambulance
