Services for Goodwin Faculty and Staff

Welcome from the Goodwin Library. The library staff looks forward to working with you. Below are listed some of the services we provide to the faculty and staff of Goodwin College. Please call or stop in to see us if you have any questions.

Library Instruction and Information Literacy

Faculty may arrange general or course-related instruction sessions for their students. These sessions, conducted by librarians in a classroom or library, are specific to each class and can provide hands-on practice with library resources. Librarians can also assist with incorporating information literacy into your syllabus and assignments. Contact a librarian at x6782; by e-mail: mnowlan@goodwin.edu; or by using our Library Instruction Request Form.

Reserves

Faculty members may place materials on reserve in the library. Materials include books, articles, videos, DVDs, lectures on audiocassette, CDs, and study guides. These materials may be used by students only in the library and may not be checked out. Faculty members may also supply copies of class materials for students to use or copy in the library. Please use our online Reserve Request Form to request materials to be put on the Reserve Shelf of the Goodwin College Library.

What can go on Library Reserve

  • Materials that belong to the Goodwin Library
  • Personal copies that belong to the faculty member
  • Photocopied materials that meet “fair use” criteria
  • Tests, class notes, syllabi, and other materials created by the faculty member (who thus holds the copyright)

Examples of materials that will not go on Library Reserve

  • Materials that belong to other libraries
  • Personal photocopies that do not meet “fair use” criteria
  • Copies of audio or video recordings of broadcast programs that do not meet fair use criteria
  • Consumable materials (e.g., commercially produced standardized tests, workbooks)

Reference, Research Assistance, and Text-A-Librarian

Librarians staff the Reference Desk during library hours of operation. Contact us to schedule individual research consultations including database searching help. Goodwin patrons can also access Text-A-Librarian, a mobile-based reference service where questions can be sent via cell phone and answered by Goodwin Librarians in real time when the library is open.

Collection Development and Suggestions for Purchase

Librarians select books and other materials based on the college curriculum, faculty research interests , and recommendations. Faculty and students are welcome to suggest items that should be added to the collections by submitting recommendations using the Faculty Materials Request Form.

Citation Management with RefWorks (coming)

RefWorks citation manager will be available to all students, faculty, and staff via the Library's web site at the new campus. RefWorks greatly enhances the library research process as it collects, stores, and organizes citations from books, articles, web sites, and other sources. The Library will offer workshops on using RefWorks.

Databases

The Library provides access to a wide range of online databases. The mix is constantly changing; consult the librarians or the list of Research Databases and other resources on the library web site. In addition to scholarly and popular journals, the databases give access to Atlases & Maps, Audio files, Biographies, Database Trials, Dictionaries & Encyclopedias, Directories, dissertations, E-book collections, Government Publications, Images, Standards, Statistics, and Technical Reports.

Interlibrary Loan - Borrowing from Other Libraries

Interlibrary Loan service obtains from other libraries materials which are either not owned by the Goodwin College Library or are not available. Use this service to obtain loans and copies of a variety of materials worldwide.

Letters of Introduction for Doing Research at Other Libraries

Faculty neeeding to perform research at libraries in the United States or abroad may request a letter of introduction from the library director. Many research and university libraries require such letters from outside researchers.

Media

Many educational titles are available in a variety of formats, including videos, DVDs, CDs, and audiocassettes. Book media for preview and classroom use can be requested using a Media Materials - Booking Request Form. See the Media Collection web page for more details, deadlines, and policies.

The library partners with other campus offices to offer online plagiarism detection services for faculty support and student education.

Library databases and electronic journals are available on campus, or off=campus to students, faculty, and staff with an OIT computer account. For complete information about remote access to library resources, see our Library Services for Remote Users webpage.

Scholar Works - Research Repository

Scholar Works is a repository for the research and scholarly output of members of the Goodwin community.

Subject Research Guides and Department Quick Guides

Librarians have developed research guides tailored to particular disciplines and to current hot topics. In many cases, research guides have been developed in collaboration with faculty for specific courses.

Computers, Copier, and Printers

The library has 21 computer workstations, one printer, and one copier for the Goodwin students and faculty. The copier is coin operated for students. The fee is ten cents per page. Faculty will be issued a unique code to use this copier.
