Library Policies - Library Floorplan
Facility
The library is the intellectual hub of Goodwin’s community. Its signature two-story space, overlooking the Connecticut River, combines the best of traditional design with the latest technological tools. The library provides leisure seating and research tables on each floor, group-study rooms, study carrels, book stacks, periodical and newspaper areas, and 34 computer work stations. Wireless connectivity is available for the library’s 50 laptop computers and students’ personal laptop computers. Other resources include a photocopier, printer, audiovisual hardware and software.
Resources
As a new college, the library’s book, periodical, newspaper, and audiovisual collections are expanding all the time. However, the bulk of the collection is kept current with digital resources of e-books, research databases, and a video / sound repository.
The library’s home page at www.goodwin.edu/Library/ is the gateway to the library’s resources, reference services, and news of interest to the Goodwin community on the library blog. Staff and students can access the library’s e-books and research databases remotely by using their SonisWeb username and password to access their accounts. Print resources are accessible to anyone using the library’s online catalog.
Services
The library provides a variety of services for staff, faculty, and students. The library home page provides forms for instruction, material, and reserve requests. There are web and video tutorials on all aspects of metaliteracy for student reinforcement and faculty instruction. Guides to Citations, Writing Skills, and Subject Resources are available in the library and on the home page. The library is open 80 hours per week, seven days a week, with extended hours during exam weeks. Real time reference is available using the Text-A-Librarian mobile platform.
To borrow materials, staff, faculty, and students must provide a valid ID card. By creating a library account, patrons can view their circulation, hold materials, renew materials, create reading lists, and more. If the library does not have a desired title, Goodwin patrons can obtain the title through the Connecticut Interlibrary Loan System.
Curriculum Support
The cornerstone of the library program is its curriculum support services. The library has developed faculty partnerships to strengthen learning outcomes for students. All freshmen must take the Introduction to the Library online course to familiarize themselves with the library and its resources. Further, the library staff is available to faculty and their classes to introduce and reinforce information literacy skills to provide their students with effective research techniques. Particular skills are introduced in the foundational courses and customized instruction is provided in advanced courses. One-on-one consultations are also available for students who need more assistance. There is always daily help for walk-in patrons in the library during operational hours. Professional development workshops are also provided to staff to introduce new resources and metaliteracy tools.
The development of resources in the library targets the baccalaureate programs supported by the College, promotes reading, and makes available ideas that develop staff, faculty, and students as advanced thinkers.
The library staff supplements resources by affiliating with statewide and national professional and academic groups and associations. These include The American Library Association, The Association of College and Research Libraries, The Connecticut Library Consortium, The Modern Language Association, and The Medical Library Association.
The library program endeavors to provide all its patrons with the tools needed to become successful scholars and lifelong learners.
