Athania Ramos

Please share a little bit about your background and what led you to Goodwin College.

I was looking to better myself educationally. I wanted for my daughter to have a better life, and I also wanted her to know that no matter what goes on in your life, you should never let anyone tell you that you cannot do something. A strong person has nothing to do with age, appearance, race, or economic status. It is the experiences you go through in life and what you learn from them that make you a better and stronger person.

Describe your experience at Goodwin and what made the college and your program the most worthwhile.

My experience at Goodwin was great. I was able to take the courses that I wanted to take and learn new experiences through my required internship. I was able to meet great professors and make new friends willing to do exactly what I was doing. Classes were held within a timeframe that I was able to attend while I was working, and even after I lost my job, classes were even easier to accommodate to.

What is your favorite quote?

“Practice what you preach.” I am not sure who said that but I wanted to be able to tell my daughter to make sure that she goes to college and further her education, knowing that I myself did the same to better myself. I don’t want to tell her to do something that I expect her to do without having done it myself.

What inspires you most?

What inspires me the most is my daughter. I never knew what living for someone was until I had her and she is worth my every breath. All the good things that I am able to do in life are because of her. She taught me to be strong and to love and care for others without being judgmental. My daughter has taught me that there are things in life that matter more than money (even though it makes situations a little better). Just seeing her smile and being able to put a smile on someone else’s face makes me feel good.

What do you hope to do after leaving college?

I hope to further my education and hopefully get a job and make a career out helping people, which is what I love doing. If I am able to help at least one person then I am happy.

Do you have a role model? Who?

I would have to say at this point in my life I am my own role model. To be so young, I have been through a lot, and now I have my own family to provide for and a little girl who is looking up to me. I have accomplished a lot for her as well as for myself. I was the first grandchild in my family to graduate high school and I am the first in my family to graduate college. For that I am very proud and no one could ever take that away.

Athania will graduate on Sunday, June 13.
