Karen Carbonell

Please share a little bit about your background and what led you to Goodwin College.

I always wanted to attend college, but as the only parent of two children, I had to put their needs first. My then 16-year-old son pointed out to me that I had always stressed the need for a college education. When I went with my daughter to her admission appointment at Goodwin (she is in the pre-nursing program at Goodwin), she reminded me of my desire to get a college education and told me that this was an opportune time for me to achieve my lifelong desire.

Describe your experience at Goodwin and what made the college and your program the most worthwhile.

My experience at Goodwin was better than awesome because of the professors I had the good fortune to have and learn from and the students with whom I shared classes.

What is your favorite quote?

"I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it."
-Maya Angelou

What inspires you most?

The more my windows are opened into the education world, the more I want. I want to learn everything I can about everything!

What do you hope to do after leaving college?

Right now I’m working on my bachelor’s and plan to pursue both master’s and doctorate degrees. I plan to continue advocating for women who are victims of domestic violence; maybe be invited back to teach some courses on domestic violence at Goodwin when the Human Services Dept. expands to four years; and writing an inspirational book.

Do you have a role model? Who?

My role models are every person who overcame some of life’s toughest adversities and made something positive of their lives.

Karen graduates from Goodwin College on Sunday, June 13.
