Magnet Schools
Goodwin College is in the process of opening three new interdistrict magnet schools on our campus, one of the first private colleges in the country to do so. The Connecticut River Academy, an early college high school with a highly innovative approach to student engagement and learning, has been operating since 2010. The Pathways Academy has been one of Hartford’s premier magnet schools for nearly ten years. The Goodwin College Early Childhood Magnet is scheduled to open for the first time in the Fall of 2013. We are presently designing and building state-of-the art facilities for all of these schools.
All three are interdistrict magnet schools, drawing students from the city of Hartford and from wide areas of Connecticut. All meet both the highest academic standards and Connecticut’s rigorous desegregation standards.
The Connecticut River Academy
An early college high school with an environmental studies theme integrated across the curriculum. Located beside the historic Connecticut River, the school program offers extensive project-based experiences in a technology-rich environment, preparing students for success in college and beyond. From the beginning of 9th grade, students have extensive academic and social experiences at the College and can take credit-bearing Goodwin College courses starting in junior year.

The Pathways Academy of Technology and Design
A Hartford Public School operated in partnership with the College, a model for collaboration between a private college and a city school district. Pathways Academy helps students to acquire technological and critical thinking skills while developing a sense of personal and social responsibility. This combination helps students compete in the rapidly changing world economy. The new Pathways Academy building will feature state-of-the-art facilities in areas such as robotics, nanotechnology, sound recording and advanced computer design. Pathways Academy was recently named one of “America’s Best High Schools” by US News & World Report.

The Goodwin College Early Childhood Magnet School
A pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten early learning center designed on the Reggio Emilia model. The Reggio approach places children and families at the center of all learning and focuses on exploration and discovery based on the interests of the children. The Early Childhood Magnet School has been created and designed as a laboratory school for students in Goodwin’s growing child study and early childhood education degree programs. Fully certified early childhood educators will provide the highest level of learning to students while training the next generation of early childhood teachers and other instructional leaders.
