Faculty and Staff Spotlight
Fred WhiteCourse Coordinator and Professor of Math Fred White has been working with Goodwin College for six years, starting off as an adjunct professor and working his way up to a course coordinator and professor of math. Despite being known as the math guru, Mr. White says his first love was computers. But cruel fate tore him from his coding jobs when he discovered one evening while driving home from work that he was going blind in one eye. Mr. White struggled with retinal detachment for over two years, which resulted in loss of eyesight in both eyes for over a year. After many surgeries, he was finally able to regain sight in his left eye, though his right eye remains severely damaged. It was after losing his job as a computer coder that he realized his love for teaching. Now he’s been promoted to course coordinator for the ModuMath course, and though he appreciates his administrative duties, “the teaching is what we’re all here for.” “I try to stress that we need to make sure our students know the basics,” he says, and this was the inspiration behind the ModuMath program that he created and now runs. The program allows students to return to the course if they failed to finish it and start from where they left off. “That’s what’s special about ModuMath- everyone moves at their own pace.” Mr. White’s well-qualified to teach a computer-based math course, having worked with IBM computers and Pfizer as an IT man, but his love of computers and mathematics extends beyond the workplace. He is a self-described ‘geek’, and in his spare time he says he loves to build computers, set up networks, and code programs.
