Certificate - School Safety and Security

The School Safety and Security certificates will provide individuals with an introduction to issues surrounding school safety and security. They will explore various types of threats, school security assessments, and emergency planning and preparedness. The need for enhanced school security has never been more urgent as the concern encompassing school safety continues to escalate. Throughout coursework, individuals will engage in applying principles learned to their own settings.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, graduate will be able to:

1. Describe the school security threat continuum and its application to school settings.

2. Summarize the need for school security assessments, including issues that may affect school climate and security.

3. Design an emergency plan that contains prevention and preparedness tactics.

4. Recognize effective strategies for post-crisis and examine lessons learned from school crisis incidents.

Admission Requirements

Complete the application for admission into Goodwin College.

Prerequisites

Students without college credits must take the ACCUPLACER® Placement Test and place into ENG 099 or higher and MATH 135. These students are eligible to complete coursework for the School Safety and Security Certificate.

Students who complete the School Safety and Security Certificate are eligible to earn the Advanced School Safety and Security Certificate, which would require completion of an additional 6 credits; specifically PSS 360 and HSR 312.

Any exceptions to the above requirements must be recommended by the Program Director and approved by the Department Chair and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate, certificate students must complete all of the listed courses, earn a minimum grade of C-, and have a cumulative GPA pf 2.3.
