ENG 245 - Contemporary American Poetry

3 credits (PREREQUISITE: ENG 101 and 3 ADDITIONAL CREDITS IN COMPOSITION)

This course provides an introduction to contemporary poetic voices and reviews the predecessors and progresses to our modern poets: Lowell, Plath, Wilbur, Ginsberg, Bishop, and Brooks. The course culminates in an in-depth survey of some of the newest voices of the exploding Multicultural Renaissance, including Komunyakaa, Ai, Marilyn Nelson, and Lucille Clifton. Students will have discussions on the emergence of poetic movements such as the Beats, Language and Confessional Poetry, Feminism, Multiculturalism and Urban Poetry. CU MC (Sp)
